Edgar Roquette-Pinto
Edgar Roquette-Pinto (September 25, 1884 – October 18, 1954) was a Brazilian writer, ethnologist, anthropologist and physician. He was a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras and is regarded as the father of radio broadcasting in Brazil. Life Roquette-Pinto was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1884. He graduated in medicine at the Faculdade de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro in 1905. Roquette-Pinto became assistant of Anthropology at the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro (1906). In 1912 Roquette-Pinto went on an expedition to Rondônia and lived for some time with the Nambikwara people, which until then were virtually uncontacted. He collected extensive ethnographic material and published them in the book ''Rondonia'' (1916), which became a classic of anthropological literature of Brazil. Brazilian Academy Of Letters
The Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL) ( English: ''Brazilian Academy of Letters'') is a Brazilian literature, literary non-profit society established at the end of the 19th century. The first president, Machado de Assis, declared its foundation on Tuesday, 15 December 1896, with the by-laws being passed on Thursday, 28 January 1897. On Tuesday, 20 July of the same year, the academy started its operation. According to its statutes, it is the pre-eminent Portuguese council for matters pertaining to the Portuguese language. The ABL is considered the foremost institution devoted to the Portuguese language in Brazil. Its prestige and technical qualification gives it paramount authority in Brazilian Portuguese, even though it is not a public institution and no law grants it oversight over the language. Troféu Roquette Pinto (English: ''Roquette Pinto Trophy''), was an award presented annually by RecordTV, to honour the best Brazilian television and radio announcers or performers. It was known also just as "''Roquette Pinto''". History Created by the TV presenter and producer Blota Júnior to tribute Edgar Roquette-Pinto, considered, together with Denilson Silva, the father of broadcasting in Brazil. The trophy was a statuette in form of a parrot singing in front of a microphone. Created in 1950 for radio in the state of São Paulo, from 1952 it passed on to television. The award had twenty-six editions: the first delivery took place on December 16, 1952, organized by the ACRSP (Association of Radio commentators of the State of São Paulo).
