Edgar Gevorgyan
Edgar Gevorgyan ( hy, Էդգար Գևորգյան, born May 21, 1982 in Vanadzor, Armenian SSR) is an Armenian weightlifter. He competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the men's 85 kg division. Gevorgyan competed along with his compatriot Tigran Vardan Martirosyan, who eventually won the bronze medal. Vanadzor ( hy, Վանաձոր) is an urban municipal community and the third-largest city in Armenia, serving as the capital of Lori Province in the northern part of the country. Olympic weightlifting, or Olympic-style weightlifting (officially named Weightlifting), is a sport in which athletes compete in lifting a barbell loaded with weight plates from the ground to overhead, with each athlete trying to successfully lift the heaviest weights. Athletes compete in two specific ways of lifting the barbell overhead: these are the snatch and the clean and jerk. The ''snatch'' is a wide-grip lift, in which the weighted barbell is lifted overhead in one motion. Weightlifting At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's 85 Kg
The men's 85 kilograms weightlifting event was the fifth men's event at the weightlifting competition, limiting competitors to a maximum of 85 kilograms of body mass. The whole competition took place on August 15, but was divided in two parts due to the number of competitors. Group B weightlifters competed at 10:00, and Group A, at 19:00. This event was the seventh Weightlifting event to conclude. Each lifter performed in both the snatch and clean and jerk lifts, with the final score being the sum of the lifter's best result in each. The athlete received three attempts in each of the two lifts; the score for the lift was the heaviest weight successfully lifted. Tie-breaking rules determined the winner. Tigran Vardan Martirosyan
Tigran Vardan Martirosyan ( hy, Տիգրան Գ. Մարտիրոսյան, born 3 March 1983 in Leninakan, Armenian SSR) is an Armenian Olympic weightlifting, weightlifter. He is 175 cm tall. Martirosyan was awarded the Honored Master of Sports of Armenia title in 2009. Biography Tigran Martirosyan began weight training in 1995 under the guidance of Vahan Bichakhchyan. Martirosyan became a three-time consecutive European Champion during his youth career in 1997, 1998 and 1999. He began performing in adult competitions in the light heavyweight division (82.5 kg) after 2003. Martirosyan competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and came in seventh place with a total of 367.5 kg. Snatch (weightlifting)
The snatch is the first of two lifts contested in the sport of weightlifting (also known as Olympic weightlifting) followed by the clean and jerk. The objective of the snatch is to lift the barbell from the ground to overhead in one continuous motion. There are four main styles of snatch used: snatch (or full snatch), split snatch, power snatch, and muscle snatch. The full lift is the most common style used in competition, while power snatches and muscle snatches are mostly used for training purposes, and split snatches are rarely used. Any of these lifts can be performed from the floor, from the hang position, or from blocks. In competition, only lifts from the floor are allowed. The clean and jerk is a composite of two weightlifting movements, most often performed with a barbell: the clean and the jerk. During the ''clean'', the lifter moves the barbell from the floor to a racked position across the deltoids, without resting fully on the clavicles. During the ''jerk'', the lifter raises the barbell to a stationary position above the head, finishing with straight arms and legs, and the feet in the same plane as the torso and barbell.
