Edenside Ground
Edenside is a cricket ground in Carlisle, Cumbria. The ground is the primary home ground of Cumbria County Cricket Club. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1850, when Carlisle played an All-England Eleven. The ground hosted its first Minor Counties Championship match when Cumberland played the Yorkshire Second XI in 1955. From 1955 to present, the ground has hosted 45 Minor Counties Championship matches. To date the ground has not hosted any MCCA Knockout Trophy matches. The ground has hosted 2 List-A matches, the first of which saw Cumberland play Middlesex in the 1996 NatWest Trophy. The second List-A match played on Edenside saw Cumberland play Kent in the 2000 NatWest Trophy. The home county lost both of these matches against their professional, first-class opponents. Carlisle ( , ; from xcb, Caer Luel) is a city that lies within the Northern English county of Cumbria, south of the Scottish border at the confluence of the rivers Eden, Caldew and Petteril. Kent County Cricket Club is one of the eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Kent. A club representing the county was first founded in 1842 but Kent teams have played top-class cricket since the early 18th century, and the club has always held first-class status. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The River Eden is a river that flows through the Eden District of Cumbria, England, on its way to the Solway Firth. Etymology The river was known to the Romans as the ''Itouna'', as recorded by the Greek geographer Claudius Ptolemaeus (Ptolemy) in the 2nd century AD. The North Lancashire and Cumbria League is an independent club cricket league for teams in Northern Lancashire and Cumbria. First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. The 2000 NatWest Trophy was the 20th and last NatWest Trophy before being renamed as the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy for the 2001 season. It was an English limited overs county cricket tournament which was held between 2 May and 26 August 2000.
