The Edenham & Little Bytham Railway was a railway company formed by Lord Willoughby de Eresby to build a line from the Great Northern Railway at Little Bytham to Edenham, serving the villages of Edenham and Grimsthorpe and also Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire, England. History The railway was originally constructed as a road, at the personal expense of Peter, Lord Willoughby de Eresby, between 1851 and 1853. In 1854 and 1855 an early traction engine, "Ophir", built at Swindon Railway Works and possibly designed by Daniel Gooch, hauled wagons on this road. Adhesion problems and steep gradients of 1 in 30 and 1 in 27 led to an experimental conversion of short stretches to a wooden tramway, and it was decided in March 1855 to convert the entire line to a standard-gauge railway. Baron Willoughby de Eresby ( ) is a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1313 for Robert de Willoughby. Since 1983, the title has been held by Jane Heathcote-Drummond-Willoughby, 28th Baroness Willoughby de Eresby. Doncaster Railway Works is a railway workshop located in Doncaster, England. Also referred to as The Plant''", it was established by the Great Northern Railway in 1853, replacing the previous works in Boston and Peterborough. Swinstead
Swinstead is a village and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated west from Bourne, north from Stamford and south-east from Grantham. It is a village of just over 100 households, the population of the civil parish being measured at 234 in the 2011 census. Swinstead parish church is dedicated to St Mary. The village's last public house closed in 2008, and the nearest amenities are away at Corby Glen. Adjacent villages include Creeton, Swayfield and Grimsthorpe. History The hall is a Grade II listed building, dating from ca 1730 but extended several times. Little Bytham is a village and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 384. It lies on the B1176 road, south from Corby Glen and north from Stamford . The East Coast Main Line railway cuts through the eastern side of the village over viaducts. Bourne Railway Station
Bourne was a railway station serving the town of Bourne in Lincolnshire, which opened in 1860 and closed to passengers in 1959. History The station was on the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway main line between the Midlands and the Norfolk Coast. It was finally closed in 1959 when the M&GN was closed. The line from Spalding and also the Sleaford branch as far as Billingborough remained in use for goods until 1964. The remaining station buildings were demolished in 2005 to make way for new residential development. The original station opened in 1860 as the terminus of the Bourn and Essendine Railway, which provided connecting services to the Great Northern main line, and the local Stamford and Essendine Railway. Grays (or Grays Thurrock) is the largest town in the borough and unitary authority of Thurrock in Essex, England. The town which is both a former civil parish and one of Thurrock's traditional Church of England parishes is located on the north bank of the River Thames.
