Eden Valley, South Australia
Eden Valley is a small South Australian town in the Barossa Ranges. It was named by the surveyors of the area after they found the word "''Eden''" carved into a tree. Eden Valley has an elevation of 460 metres and an average annual rainfall of 716.2mm. Eden Valley is in the Barossa Council local government area, the state electoral district of Schubert and the federal divisions of Barker and Mayo. Wine industry Eden Valley gives its name to a wine growing region that shares its western boundary with the Barossa Valley wine region. The region is of similar size to the Barossa Valley wine region, and is well known for producing high quality riesling and shiraz wines. Englishman Joseph Gilbert planted the first Eden Valley vineyard, Pewsey Vale, in 1847. Electoral District Of Schubert
Schubert is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly covering an area of 2,017.8 km². It is named after Max Schubert, the winemaker of Penfolds Grange Hermitage. The Barossa Valley area was first represented by the seat of Barossa. The seat of Custance was abolished and recreated as Schubert in the 1994 redistribution and first contested at the 1997 election. High Eden
High Eden is the Australian geographical indication of a subregion of the Eden Valley wine region within the Barossa zone in Australia. The High Eden wine region was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 28 August 2001. It is a somewhat oval shaped area in the western part of Eden Valley of slightly less than 40 square kilometres with an elevation of about 500 metres above sea level, the highest point in Eden Valley. It contains parts of the localities of Flaxman Valley and Pewsey Vale. The region is sparsely populated and the hilly terrain is generally unspoilt with native vegetation such as giant red gum trees intact. Minute blue wrens and wedge-tailed eagles inhabit the area. Joseph Gilbert (vigneron)
Joseph Gilbert (1800 – 23 December 1881) was a pastoralist and winemaker in South Australia from 1839 until his death. Gilbert was born in Puckshipton, Wiltshire, England, in the Vale of Pewsey. The second of four sons, his father was Joseph Gilbert and his mother, Jane (née Pike). He studied at Marlborough College in Wiltshire and learnt about vine-growing and winemaking on the European mainland. He migrated to South Australia in 1839 on the ''Buckinghamshire'' and immediately erected his prefabricated two-roomed Manning cottage on an Adelaide allotment. He acquired a property on the South Para River and stocked it with sheep purchased from Van Diemen's Land. He later moved his flock to a selection near Lyndoch, which he named "Pewsey Vale" and developed into an ideal country home. Syrah (), also known as Shiraz, is a dark-skinned grape variety grown throughout the world and used primarily to produce red wine.
