The Ecologist Greens ( el, Οικολόγοι Πράσινοι (ΟΠ), ', OP) are a Greek green political party. They are a member of the European Green Party. History The Ecological Forum, the body that lead to the establishment of the party, was founded after a proposal of the local group Ecological Movement of Thessaloniki ( el, Οικολογική Κίνηση Θεσσαλονίκης, ''http://ecology-salonika.org/2010/''), and brought together the political party "Green Politics" ( el, Πράσινη Πολιτική, ''Prasini Politiki''), the previous Greek member of the European Green Party, with other local ecological groups and independent ecologists. 2007 Greek Legislative Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Greece on Sunday, 16 September 2007 to elect the 300 members of the Hellenic Parliament. The leading party for a second term was New Democracy under the leadership of Kostas Karamanlis with 42%, followed by George Papandreou and PASOK with 38%. New Democracy managed to secure an absolute but narrow majority of 152 out of 300 seats in parliament. The populist Popular Orthodox Rally entered the parliament for the first time with 10 seats, while the parties of the left, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and Syriza, enjoyed a significant increase in their vote share. KKE received 8% of the votes (up from 6%) and won 22 seats (from 12), while Syriza received 5% of the votes (up 2pp) and 14 seats. First Cabinet Of Alexis Tsipras
Following his victory in legislative elections held on 25 January 2015, the newly elected Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras appointed a new cabinet to succeed the cabinet of Antonis Samaras, his predecessor. A significant reshuffle took place on 17 July 2015. Tsipras resigned as Prime Minister on 20 August 2015, and after opposition parties failed to form their own government, on 27 August Vassiliki Thanou-Christophilou was appointed as an interim Prime Minister, and her caretaker cabinet was sworn in on 28 August. Following the subsequent September legislative election, Tsipras was re-appointed as Prime Minister on 21 September and appointed a second cabinet that was sworn in on 23 September. Giannis Tsironis
Giannis Tsironis ( el, Γιάννης Τσιρώνης; born 1958) is a Greek politician and activist. He is a member of the Ecologist Greens and their current spokesperson. From January to August 2015, he served as the Alternate Minister for the Environment and Energy in the First Cabinet of Alexis Tsipras, as part of an electoral alliance between the Ecologist Greens and Syriza. He resumed this role from September 2015 to November 2016, as part of the Second Cabinet of Alexis Tsipras, in which he also served as the Alternative Minister for Agricultural Development and Food from November 2016 to August 2018. Giorgos Dimaras ( el, Γιώργος Δημαράς; born 16 December 1946) is a Greek politician. He is a member of the Ecologist Greens, but was elected as a Syriza Member of the Hellenic Parliament for Athens B at the January 2015 Greek legislative election. Early life and education Dimaras was born in Missolonghi to a rural family. He attended Palamaiki School in Missolonghi before moving to Athens to work and study. He studied economics at the Athens University of Economics and Business. Political career Dimaras has been the Coordinator of the Executive Committee of the Ecologist Greens. Dimaras was a candidate for the Ecologist Greens in the 2014 European Parliament election in Greece. January 2015 Greek Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in Greece on Sunday 25 January 2015 to elect all 300 members to the Hellenic Parliament in accordance with the constitution. The election was held earlier than scheduled due to the failure of the Greek parliament to elect a new president on 29 December 2014. Syriza won a legislative election for the first time, winning 36% of votes and 149 seats, just two short of an absolute majority. The centre-right New Democracy (ND), the outgoing party of government, saw only a small decline from 30% to 28%, but in falling to second place suffered its worst showing to date in terms of seats. The First Economic Adjustment Programme for Greece, initially called the Economic Adjustment Programme for Greece and usually referred to as the first bailout package or the first memorandum, is a memorandum of understanding on financial assistance to the Hellenic Republic in order to cope with the Greek government-debt crisis. It was signed on 3 May 2010 by the Greek Government under then-prime minister George Papandreou on one hand, and on the other hand by the European Commission on behalf of the Eurogroup, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Alexis Tsipras ( el, Αλέξης Τσίπρας, ; born 28 July 1974) is a Greek politician serving as Leader of the Official Opposition since 2019. He served as Prime Minister of Greece from 2015 to 2019. Tsipras has led the Coalition of the Radical Left, known as Syriza, a left-wing political party, since 2009. 2009 Greek Legislative Election
Early parliamentary elections were held in Greece on 4 October 2009. Elections were not required until September 2011, but on 2 September 2009 Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis of New Democracy announced that he would request President Karolos Papoulias dissolve Parliament and call elections. Parliament was dissolved on 9 September. The result was a victory for the opposition PASOK party led by George Papandreou, who became the new Prime Minister. New Democracy lost 61 of its 152 seats, with its vote share dropping by over 8 percentage points. Voting was mandatory; however there are no sanctions or penalties for not voting. 2009 European Parliament Election In Greece
European Parliament elections were held in Greece on 7 June 2009 to elect the 22 Greek members of the European Parliament. Members were elected by party-list proportional representation with a 3% electoral threshold. The number of seats allocated to Greece was reduced from 24 to 22, as a result of new member states joining the European Union (EU).
