Eclipse Award For Outstanding Sprint Horse
The American Champion Sprint Horse award is an American Thoroughbred horse racing honor. Created in 1947, in 1971 it became part of the Eclipse Awards program and is awarded annually to the top horse in sprint races (usually those run at a distance of under one mile). The ''Daily Racing Form'' (DRF) began naming an annual sprint champion in 1947. Starting in 1950, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations (TRA) began naming its own champion. The following list provides the name of the horses chosen by these organizations. The ''Daily Racing Form'', the Thoroughbred Racing Associations, and the National Turf Writers Association all joined forces in 1971 to create the Eclipse Award. Through 2006, the Sprint Champion was chosen from a horse of either sex. Runhappy (foaled March 4, 2012) is a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who was the 2015 American Champion Sprint Horse after winning six consecutive races including the King's Bishop Stakes, Phoenix Stakes, Breeders' Cup Sprint, and Malibu Stakes. Background Runhappy is a bay horse bred in Kentucky by Wayne, Gray and Bryan Lyster. He is from the first crop of foals sired by Super Saver, the winner of the 2010 Kentucky Derby. Super Saver made a very promising start at stud, with his early progeny also including Competitive Edge (Hopeful Stakes) and Embellish The Lace (Alabama Stakes). Runhappy's dam Bella Jolie won two minor races at Delaware Park Racetrack in 2010. She was descended from Queen Nasra, a broodmare who was the ancestor of many important winners including Balanchine. Benny The Bull (horse)
Benny the Bull is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse and active stallion. A specialist sprinter, he raced mainly over distances of six and seven furlongs and won races including the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash, Sunshine Millions Sprint, True North Handicap and Smile Sprint Handicap. In 2008 he became one of relatively few American-trained racehorses to win a major international race overseas when he won the Dubai Golden Shaheen. In the same year he was voted American Champion Sprint Horse at the Eclipse Awards. Background Benny the Bull is a dark bay or brown horse bred in Florida by Tamoka Farms. He was sired by Lucky Lionel, an American-bred horse who was trained in Europe, where he won the Norfolk Stakes and the Prix Robert Papin in 1995. Kodiak Kowboy (foaled April 16, 2005 in Kentucky) is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse owned by Vinery Stables and Fox Hill Farms and trained by Steve Asmussen. He was also trained by Larry Jones for part of his career. In 2007 he won a Sovereign Award as Canadian Champion 2-Year-Old Colt. Kodiak Kowboy is a multiple grade one winning horse and top class sprinter. In 2009, he was voted the Eclipse Award as the American Champion Sprint Horse (2009) for his victories in the Carter Handicap, Vosburgh Stakes and Cigar Mile Handicap. He was retired to stud duty on November 28, 2009 and stood at the Vinery in 2010 as the property of a syndicate for a fee of $15,000. Big Drama (February 14, 2006 – January 25, 2021) was a Thoroughbred racehorse. He was euthanized in January 2021 following complications with a stomach issue. Background Big Drama was a dark bay bred in Florida by his owner Harold Queen. He was trained by David Fawkes. He was sired by Montbrook out of Riveting Drama. Swami Shivananda (1854–1934), born Tarak Nath Ghosal, was a Hindu spiritual leader and a direct disciple of Ramakrishna, who became the second president of the Ramakrishna Mission.
