Eberhard Gildemeister
Eberhard Gildemeister (1897–1978) was a German architect who was mainly active in Bremen. In addition to a number of churches and residential buildings, he designed the Sparkasse building on Bremen's market square. Early life Born in Bremen, Gildemeister was the fourth son of the successful architect Eduard Gildemeister. After serving in the army from 1915 to 1918, he studied architecture at the Darmstadt University of Technology. Career When 30, he joined the practice of Rudolph Jacobs. The following year (1928), together with his brother Hermann Gildemeister, he won a competition for designing the Haus des Reichs, still one of Bremen's largest office buildings. Considered to have a "festive" appearance, it was completed in 1931. From 1932 to 1939, the Gildemeisters designed a number of residential buildings. Bremen (Low German also: ''Breem'' or ''Bräm''), officially the City Municipality of Bremen (german: Stadtgemeinde Bremen, ), is the capital of the German state Free Hanseatic City of Bremen (''Freie Hansestadt Bremen''), a two-city-state consisting of the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven. Haus Der Stadtsparkasse (Bremen)
Haus der Stadtsparkasse (Stadtsparkasse Building) is a Rococo landmark on the "Marktplatz" (Market Square) in Bremen, Germany. It was completed in the 1950s combining the historic front gable from another site with the more recent architecture of the remainder of the building. History In 1755, Johann Georg Hoffschlaeger, a wine merchant and city counsellor, had a house built on a site now designated as No. 31B, An der Schlachte. The stonemason Theophilus Wilhelm Frese (1696–1763) decorated the façade in the Rococo style, with a bow window and a gable topped with a wig. In 1836, the building was bought by Georg Friedrich Pflüger who used it as an inn named ''Stadt Paris'' (City of Paris). In 1875, the property was taken over by Carl Wilhelm Meyer, a publicly appointed sampler. In the early 20th century, a new building designed by Albert Dunkel maintained the Rococo façade. Bremer Marktplatz
The Bremer Marktplatz (Bremen Market Square) is a square situated in the centre of the Hanseatic City of Bremen. One of the oldest public squares in the city, it covers an area of . It is no longer used as a market place except for the Christmas market and the annual Freimarkt Fair at the end of October. History and development At least parts of the market place had been in function since the age of Charlemagne. Its southern side originally was the bank of river Balge (river), a branch of the Weser and Bremen's first port. There was an easy access for boats, but this section of the bank was too low for permanent buildings. Eduard Model Accessories is a Czech manufacturer of plastic models and finescale model accessories. Formed in 1989 in the city of Most, Eduard began in a rented cellar as a manufacturer of photoetched brass model components. Following the success of their early products, the company branched off into plastic models in 1993. As of 2006, Eduard's product line contained some 30 plastic kits and more than 800 individual photoetch detail sets. Rudolph Jacobs
Heinrich Rudolf Jacobs (1879–1946) was a German architect who was active in Bremen. Although much of his work was destroyed in the war, the facade of the post office building next to the station still stands. He is also remembered for his work on the Bremer Marktplatz, traces of which remain in the Rathscafé. Biography Born in Elberfeld, after completing his studies as an architect he moved to Bremen at the beginning of the 20th century when, thanks to the city's prosperity, many new buildings were being planned. In 1905, Jacobs won a competition for the construction of a building on the market place, now known as the Rathscafé. It was successfully completed in 1911 in the Reform architecture style. As a result of his success, he was commissioned to design various other buildings in the city. The Park House in the Bürgerpark was completed in 1913 but was destroyed in the war. Schlachte
The Schlachte is a promenade along the east bank of the River Weser in the old town of Bremen in the north of Germany. Once one of the city's harbours, it is now popular for its restaurants, beer gardens and river boats. Etymology ''Schlachte'' is a Low German word for a river bank reinforced with wooden piles driven in by the action of hammering (cf. German ''eingeschlagenen''). The word ''slait'' was used as early as 1250 to refer to the river bank in Bremen. History In 1247, following authorisation from Archbishop Gerhard II, the area between St Martini's Church and Zweite Schlachtpforte (a street meaning "second quayside gate") was settled by local citizens and traders. In 1250, those privileged to operate water mills were required to maintain the wooden piles used to reinforce the river bank. Kunsthalle Bremen
The Kunsthalle Bremen is an art museum in Bremen, Germany. It is located close to the Bremen Old Town on the "Culture Mile" (german: Kulturmeile). The Kunsthalle was built in 1849, enlarged in 1902 by architect Eduard Gildemeister, and expanded several more times, most notably in 2011. Since 1977, the building has been designated a Kulturdenkmal on Germany's buildings heritage list. The museum houses a collection of European paintings from the 14th century to the present day, sculptures from the 16th to 21st centuries and a New Media collection.
