Eastleigh–Romsey Line
The Eastleigh–Romsey line is the railway line from Eastleigh to Romsey in Hampshire, England. At Eastleigh, trains join the South West Main Line for onward travel to Southampton. At Romsey most trains terminate. The line is not electrified and all trains are diesel-powered. History The line, part of the London and South Western Railway, was part of the Bishopstoke (now Eastleigh) to Salisbury line which was authorized on 4 July 1844. Construction of the line was problematic, as landowners, somewhat unusually, took an obstructive attitude to the railway. The problems were exacerbated by the choice of a small contractor over the more well established and more experienced options in order to save money. In addition, the weather conditions during construction caused earthworks to slip and then freeze. The British Rail Class 158 '' Express Sprinter'' is a diesel multiple unit (DMU) passenger train. It is a member of the Sprinter series of regional trains, produced as a replacement for British Rail's first generation of DMUs; of the other members, the Class 159 is almost identical to the Class 158, having been converted from Class 158 to Class 159 in two batches to operate express services from London Waterloo to the West of England. Chandler's Ford (originally The Ford and historically Chandlersford) is a largely residential area and civil parish in the Eastleigh (borough), Borough of Eastleigh in Hampshire, England. Northam railway station served the suburb of Northam in Southampton, England. History The London and Southampton Railway (L&SR) was opened in stages. Most of the portion south of was opened on 10 June 1839, to a temporary terminus in Southampton called Northam Road. Not long before the opening, on 4 June 1839, the L&SR was renamed the London and South Western Railway (LSWR). Southampton Terminus Railway Station
Southampton Terminus railway station served the Port of Southampton and Southampton City Centre, England from 1839 until 1966. The station was authorised on 25 July 1834 and built as the terminus of the London and Southampton Railway, which later changed its name to the London and South Western Railway (LSWR).
