Eastern Herzegovina
East Herzegovina ( sh-Latn-Cyrl, Istočna Hercegovina, Источна Херцеговина) is the eastern part of the historical Herzegovina region in Bosnia and Herzegovina, east of the Neretva river, part of the Republika Srpska entity. Major towns are Trebinje, Nevesinje and Bileća, predominantly inhabited by ethnic Serbs (see Serbs of Bosnia and Herzegovina). West Herzegovina is the western part, west of the Neretva river, and is today administratively part of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton and West Herzegovina Canton, predominantly inhabited by ethnic Croats, located in the Federation of B&H entity. The easternmost parts of historical Herzegovina (the Duchy of St. Sava and Sanjak of Herzegovina) lie in Montenegro, in so-called "Old Herzegovina", which became part of the Principality of Montenegro in 1878. Bosnia and Herzegovina ( sh, / , ), abbreviated BiH () or B&H, sometimes called Bosnia–Herzegovina and often known informally as Bosnia, is a country at the crossroads of south and southeast Europe, located in the Balkans. Ljubinje
Ljubinje ( sr-cyrl, Љубиње) is a town and municipality located in Republika Srpska, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is situated in south-eastern part of Herzegovina region. As of 2013, the town has a population of 2,744 inhabitants, while the municipality has 3,511 inhabitants. History Ancient history In antiquity, a road ran from Narona (near Metković) to Epidaurum (Cavtat) via Pardua, in present-day village Gradac near Ljubinje. The remains of a Roman settlement have been identified near Ljubinje. No systematic expert investigations have been conducted in the area (as of 1973). Middle Ages In the early medieval period the area of present-day Ljubinje municipality belonged to the large ''župa'' (county) of Popovo, constituting the northernmost part of Popovo county, bordering with the counties of Dubrave and Dabar. Istočni Mostar ( sr-cyrl, Источни Мостар, lit=East Mostar) is a municipality located in Republika Srpska, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. As of 2013, it has a population of 257 inhabitants. History Istočni Mostar was created in 1995, following the end of the Bosnian War. It was known as Srpski Mostar ( sr-cyrl, Српски Мостар, lit=Serb Mostar) until 2004, after which it was renamed to its current name ''Istočni Mostar''. Gacko
Gacko ( sr-cyrl, Гацко) is a town and municipality located in Republika Srpska, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is situated in the region of East Herzegovina. As of 2013, the town has a population of 5,784 inhabitants, while the municipality has 8,990 inhabitants. Geography The municipality covers an area of , making it one of the larger municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The town is near the state border with Montenegro. History Middle Ages In the 14th century the region was governed by the powerful Vojinović family. In 1359, ''veliki čelnik'' Dimitrije held the region. Berkovići ( sr-cyr, Берковићи) is a village and municipality located in southern Republika Srpska, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. As of 2013, it has a population of 2,114 inhabitants. Geography The municipality is located in the westernmost part of East Herzegovina. Defter
A ''defter'' (plural: ''defterler'') was a type of tax register and land cadastre in the Ottoman Empire. Description The information collected could vary, but ''tahrir defterleri'' typically included details of villages, dwellings, household heads (adult males and widows), ethnicity/religion (because these could affect tax liabilities/exemptions), and land use. The defter-i hakâni was a land registry, also used for tax purposes. Each town had a defter and typically an officiator or someone in an administrative role to determine whether the information should be recorded. The officiator was usually some kind of learned man who had knowledge of state regulations. The defter was used to record family interactions such as marriage and inheritance. These records are useful for historians because such information allows for a more in-depth understanding of land ownership among Ottomans.
