Eastern is an unincorporated community located in Floyd County, Kentucky, United States. Education Three Floyd County Schools are located in Eastern: * James A. Duff Elementary School * Allen Central Middle School * Allen Central High School A new Floyd Central High School is nearing completion in the community. It will replace both Allen Central High and South Floyd High School, and is expected to open in the fall of 2017. At that time, Allen Central will be converted into a technical education hub for the Floyd County school district. Eastern has a public library, a branch of the Floyd County Public Library. Kenny Rice (born July 28, 1956) is an American sportscaster known nationally for his horse racing reporting with NBC and MMA coverage for HDNet. Biography Kenny Rice was born July 28, 1956 in McDowell, Floyd County, Kentucky. He grew up in the town of Eastern, and began his career as a disc jockey while in high school for WDOC in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. After graduating from the University of Kentucky in 1980, he became the Sports Director for WTVQ TV in Lexington. Prestonsburg, Kentucky
Prestonsburg is a small home rule-class city in and the county seat of Floyd County, Kentucky, United States. It is in the eastern part of the state in the valley of the Big Sandy River. The population was 3,255 at the time of the 2010 census, down from 3,612 at the 2000 census. History The area was part of the grant in the early 1700s to the family of John Preston's wife, born Elizabeth Patton, which he administered on her behalf. The grant was intended to permit British colonization beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains, but subsequent French and Indian resistance and a reversal of British policy limited its impact. The land was not settled until John Spurlock of Montgomery County, Virginia, arrived in 1791. He laid out the town of "Preston's Station" in 1797. Floyd Central High School (FCHS) is a secondary school located in Floyd County, Kentucky, United States, that opened in September 2017. The high school is a consolidation of Allen Central High School and South Floyd High School. The school mascot is Jaguars. School colors are Kentucky Teal, Black, and Gold. Academics Along with the standard curriculum, FCHS will also offer online college courses, AP & dual credit courses. JROTC Keeping with decade old tradition that Allen Central High School had, FCHS will have their own JROTC unit. Allen Central High School
Allen Central High School (Allen Central, Central, or ACHS) was a Title I American high school located in Eastern, Floyd County, Kentucky, United States, and was one of four public high schools in the Floyd County School system. The school colors were Columbia blue and gray; however, over time dark red has been added. Built in the early 70s, with its first students being received in the fall of 1972, the first principal at Allen Central was Dave Hensley. After his death, a bridge that carries Kentucky Route 80 in front of Allen Central Middle School and Hensley's former home was renamed the Dave Hensley Memorial Bridge. The nickname of Allen Central is Rebels. American football games are played on Rebel Field. Basketball, volleyball and archery are played in the J. H. Campbell Gymnasium.
