East Midlands Councils
East Midlands Councils is a consultative forum for local government in the East Midlands region of England. It is a regional grouping of the Local Government Association and the regional employers organisation. It was established in April 2010 as a consequence of the dissolution of the former East Midlands Regional Assembly. East Midlands Councils consists of 98 Members; 92 Local Authority Members, two Fire and Rescue Authority Members, two Police Authority Members and two representatives of Parish and Town Councils. Councillor Martin Hill is the chair. Executive Board The Executive Board is the executive arm of East Midlands Councils and functions as the Local Authority Leaders' Board for the region. East Midlands Regional Assembly
The East Midlands Regional Assembly was the regional chamber for the East Midlands region of the England. It was based at Melton. History It was created by the Regional Development Agencies Act 1998. It was based opposite PERA on ''Nottingham Road'' in Melton Mowbray. Function It was originally created to divide up the money given in government grants for the East Midlands. However, EMDA in Nottingham, the local government-run regional development agency, is taking over this role, and has done similar work in the past. It is currently involved in promoting energy efficiency throughout businesses and local authorities in the East Midlands. Structure It had 111 members, with seventy from the 46 local authorities and thirty-five from local businesses. The Assembly Board has 18 members. There are 20 permanent staff. East Midlands
The East Midlands is one of nine official regions of England at the first level of ITL for statistical purposes. It comprises the eastern half of the area traditionally known as the Midlands. It consists of Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire (except North and North East Lincolnshire), Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. The region has an area of , with a population over 4.5 million in 2011. The most populous settlements in the region are Derby, Leicester, Lincoln, Mansfield, Northampton and Nottingham. Local Government Association
The Local Government Association (LGA) is the national membership body for local authorities. Its core membership is made up of 339 English councils and the 22 Welsh councils through the Welsh Local Government Association. The LGA is politically-led and cross-party. As the national voice of local government, it works on behalf of councils to give local government a strong, credible voice with national government, to promote the positive reputation of the sector and to secure funding and powers on behalf of councils and the communities they serve. Regional Employers Organisations
There are nine regional employers organisations in England, corresponding to the regions of England, and one each for Wales and Northern Ireland. Structure They represents the interests of local authorities as major employers, specialising in human resources, organisational development and employee relations. In most cases they are integrated into the Local Government Association's regional bodies, although some have a distinct identities or have continued exist where there is no longer a regional body. Local Authority Leaders' Board
Local authority leaders' boards are voluntary regional associations of council leaders that have been established in England outside of Greater London to replace certain functions of the now abolished regional chambers. The establishment of the boards was part of the UK Government's ''Review of Sub-National Economic Development and Regeneration''. which brought forward the Government's plans to alter the structure of regional governance in England and was mandated by the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009. In June 2010, the new Conservative-LibDem coalition government announced plans to remove funding from the new boards and to remove their statutory functions. East Midlands Development Agency
East Midlands Development Agency, abbreviated EMDA, was the regional development agency for the East Midlands region of England formed in 1999. Structure and function EMDA’s office was located next to a Premier Inn, BBC East Midlands (and Radio Nottingham), and the NHS walk-in centre on ''London Road'' on a roundabout called 'Boots Island' on the A60. From April 2010, the functions of the former East Midlands Regional Assembly were transferred to EMDA. The Chairman of the Board of EMDA was Dr Bryan Jackson OBE.
