East Journey
East Journey are a rock/reggae band from North East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. They combined modern and traditional music and sing in both English and Yolŋu. History The band formed in 2010, and their debut album ''Guwak'' was released on 30 March 2012. They have had airplay on Triple J and Radio Australia, and had several nominations and wins at the National Indigenous Music Awards between 2012 and 2015. In 2015 they collaborated with Yothu Yindi on a project called Genesis, which included an EP and a performance at the National Indigenous Music Awards 2015. In June 2021 they played at the Yarrapay Festival, at Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre in Yirrkala, along with Yothu Yindi, the Andrew Gurruwiwi Band, and Yirrmal. Arnhem Land
Arnhem Land is a historical region of the Northern Territory of Australia, with the term still in use. It is located in the north-eastern corner of the territory and is around from the territory capital, Darwin. In 1623, Dutch East India Company captain Willem Joosten van Colster (or Coolsteerdt) sailed into the Gulf of Carpentaria and Cape Arnhem is named after his ship, the ''Arnhem'', which itself was named after the city of Arnhem in the Netherlands. Djalu Gurruwiwi
Djalu Gurruwiwi, also written Djalu ( – 12 May 2022), was a Yolngu man from Arnhem Land in northern Australia, known worldwide for his skill as a player, maker and spiritual keeper of the yiḏaki (didgeridoo). He was also a respected artist, with works in several galleries. Life Gurruwiwi was born at the mission station on Wirriku Island (also known as Jirgarri), one of the smaller islands in the Wessel Islands group. He has also self-reported being born on Milingimbi Island (also known as Yurruwi, in the Crocodile Islands), with both of these island groups being off Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, Australia. Yirrmal Marika (born 1993), known mononymous person, mononymously Yirrmal, is an Indigenous Australian vocalist. A Yolngu man, his music features traditional sounds and elements of Yolŋu languages, Yolŋu music. Early life Yirrmal Marika was born in 1993 in Yirrkala in the Rirratjingu clan and began learning music at age 11. Personal life Yirrmal's father Witiyana Marika was a singer and dancer in Yothu Yindi and is related to Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, Dr Gurrumul Yunupingu on his mother's side. Yirrmal cites his grandfather and former lead singer of Yothu Yindi, Mandawuy Yunupingu, Dr Yunupingu as his biggest influence saying "He was my inspiration since I was a kid. The National Indigenous Music Awards 2015 are the 12th annual National Indigenous Music Awards. The nominations were announced on 10 July 2015 and the awards ceremony was held on 22 July 2015. For the first time in National Indigenous Music Awards history two artists were awarded the Artist of the Year prize; Jessica Mauboy and Dan Sultan.
