East Germany National Athletics Team
The East Germany national athletics team represented East Germany at the international athletics competitions such as Olympic Games or World Athletics Championships. History After the defeat in World War II, Germany was not invited to various events, and appeared at the Olympic Games for the first time in Helsinki 1952 and for the next three editions afterwards competed as one team, up to and including the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Germany’s first appearance at the European Championships after the war was in Bern 1954, and even before the construction of the Berlin Wall (1961-1989) at the European Championships competed as two separate teams (East Germany and West Germany), in the 1958 and 1962 Championships, and this continued up to 1990, for the last time at the ''European Championships'' in Split 1990). The government of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) conducted a decades long program of coercive administration and distribution of performance-enhancing drugs, initially testosterone, later mainly anabolic drugs to its elite athletes. The aim of this program was to bolster the state image and prestige by winning medals in international competition such as the Olympic Games. The East German doping system started in the 1960s. The system was extremely formalised and heavily based on a notion of secrecy. On a performance level, the system was successful. The European Athletics Championships is a biennial (from 2010) athletics event organised by the European Athletics Association and is recognised as the elite continental outdoor athletics championships for Europe. Editions First held, for men only, in 1934 in Turin, and separately for women for the first time in Vienna in 1938, the Championships took place every four years following the end of the World War II, with the exception of the 1969 and 1971 editions, becoming a joint men's and women's competition from the third edition in 1946 in Oslo. Athletics has been contested at every Summer Olympics since the birth of the modern Olympic movement at the 1896 Summer Olympics. The athletics program traces its earliest roots to events used in the ancient Greek Olympics. The modern program includes track and field events, road running events, and race walking events. Cross country running was also on the program in earlier editions but it was dropped after the 1924 Summer Olympics. Summary Events The events contested have varied widely. From 1900 to 1920, tug of war was considered to be part of the Olympic athletics programme, although the sports of tug of war and athletics are now considered distinct. The following are the national records in athletics in Germany maintained by its national athletics federation, Deutscher Leichtathletik-Verband (DLV). The lists do differ according to whether a German athlete started at the time of preparation of the relevant records for the Association of Germany (DLV) or the German Democratic Republic (DVfL). In 2006 the DLV extended its list of records with a preamble: "According to present evidence the following list includes some record holders suspected of having violated anti-doping rules during their sporting career. The 15th European Athletics Championships were held from 26 August to 2 September 1990 in Split, Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia. The host stadium was Stadion Poljud.
