East Cannington, Western Australia
East Cannington is a southeastern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Canning. History East Cannington, previously part of Queens Park Road Board District and once incorporating present day Beckenham, was largely a semi-rural area, with only the area near the railway used for housing. In 1959, the suburb was gazetted as a postal district. Many farms and horse agistment properties once populated East Cannington until developers realised its potential in the 1990s and thus almost all available land has now given way to suburban housing. Armadale Railway Line
The Armadale line is a suburban rail service in Western Australia that runs from Perth to Armadale on the South Western Railway. This service is planned to extend to the suburb of Byford over an new railway line constructed as part of the Byford Rail Extension project. The Thornlie line is a service that runs on the South Western Railway from Perth to a junction between Beckenham and Kenwick and continues on a short branch line to Thornlie that opened on 7 August 2005. Cannington Railway Station
Cannington Station is a railway station serving the suburb of Cannington south of Perth, Western Australia. It is located from Perth Station on the Armadale/Thornlie Line, part of the Transperth network. History The original Cannington station was located between Station Street and Crawford Road in East Cannington, and was one of the original stations operational when the Armadale Line opened in 1889. As part of the electrification of the line in the early 1990s, the original Cannington station was replaced by a new station to the north-west. Future As part of a Metronet project for several level crossing removals on the Armadale line, Cannington Station will be rebuilt as a new elevated station with island platforms, and a larger, 16 stand bus interchange underneath the station platforms. A Scout hall (also Scout hut, Scout den or Scout headquarters) is a building owned or rented and used as a meeting place by a Scout Group. Sevenoaks Senior College
Sevenoaks Senior College is a comprehensive public co-educational high day school, located in Cannington, southeast of Perth, Western Australia, close to the Cannington railway station. Opened in 2001, the school is a senior secondary campus which accepts Year 11 and Year 12 students from the Perth metropolitan region. History The school is sited on the grounds of what was formerly Cannington Senior High School, which was built in 1965 and existed until 2000. The decision was made to close Cannington and open two new schools—Cannington Community College (K–10) and Sevenoaks Senior College (Years 11 and 12). Westfield Carousel
Westfield Carousel is an Australian shopping centre in the Perth suburb of Cannington. It is located approximately from Perth's central business district on the Albany Highway and approximately from Cannington railway station. Following a redevelopment in 2018, Westfield Carousel became the largest shopping centre in Western Australia. Darling Scarp
The Darling Scarp, also referred to as the Darling Range or Darling Ranges, is a low escarpment running north–south to the east of the Swan Coastal Plain and Perth, Western Australia. The escarpment extends generally north of Bindoon, to the south of Pemberton. The adjacent Darling Plateau goes easterly to include Mount Bakewell near York and Mount Saddleback near Boddington. It was named after the Governor of New South Wales, Lieutenant-General Ralph Darling. History The feature was first recorded as General Darling Range by Charles Fraser, Government Botanist with Captain James Stirling aboard in March 1827. Lesmurdie, Western Australia
Lesmurdie is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Kalamunda. It was established in 1897 by Archibald Sanderson, a politician and journalist, who began buying properties in the area from the Canning Jarrah Timber Company to build up a rural retreat and fruit-growing property. He named it after Lesmurdie Cottage, a shooting box near Dufftown, Scotland that his father had rented. It was officially gazetted on 8 June 1959. It is viewed as being a rival suburb to the neighbouring suburb of Kalamunda directly to the north. The main access to the suburb from the Swan Coastal Plain is via Welshpool Road East, which snakes its way up the side of the Darling Scarp from the suburb of Wattle Grove. Welshpool Road
Welshpool Road is a major arterial road running through the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia. Although the road is now split in two, having had its western and eastern sections disconnected due to the extension of Roe Highway, it remains Welshpool's second most important road (after Orrong Road), and the highest quality access road for the Darling Scarp. Welshpool Road East is part of State Route 8, while the entire road was previously allocated State Route 35. City Of Canning
The City of Canning is a local government area in the southeastern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth, about southeast of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of and had a population of approximately 90,000 as at the 2016 Census. History A short-lived attempt to create a town trust for the Canning District lasted from 1843-1847, before it was dissolved. The area continued to develop under the control of a Central Board of Works until, in 1871, the Canning Road District was established under the ''District Roads Act 1871''.
