The 2nd Louis Vuitton Cup was held in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1987. The winner, Stars & Stripes, went on to challenge for and win the 1987 America's Cup. Teams Twelve syndicates from six countries (Canada, France, Italy, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States) competed in 25 boats for the right to challenge. A further two syndicates entered but failed to compete in the Cup itself. The first syndicates arrived in Fremantle in 1984 with most having established a presence by late 1985 for the 1986 12-Metre World Championships. It was estimated that the foreign syndicates spent $200M in the challenge efforts. US Merchant Marine Academy Foundation (USA) The syndicate from New York Yacht Club was the first foreign syndicate to arrive at Fremantle in 1984. ''Stars & Stripes'' (''Team Dennis Conner'') is the name of an America's Cup syndicate operated by Dennis Conner and its racing yachts. The name "Stars & Stripes" refers to the nickname often used for the flag of the United States. Courageous (yacht)
''Courageous'' is a 12-metre class racing yacht. It was the third boat to win the America's Cup twice, in 1974 and 1977, after '' Columbia'' in 1899 and 1901, and '' Intrepid'' in 1967 and 1970. All three yachts were fielded by the New York Yacht Club. The Olin J. Stephens-designed sloop was the first all aluminum-hulled 12-metre class yacht. History ''Courageous'' successfully defended the America's Cup in 1974 for the US with Ted Hood at the helm. After the 1974 cup, Hood built a new boat, ''Independence'', which he thought was faster than ''Courageous'', and sold ''Courageous'' to Ted Turner. Turner won the 1977 America's Cup defender trials in ''Courageous'', beating Hood in the process, and then went on to successfully defend the America's Cup against Australia later that year. New Zealand Challenge
New Zealand Challenge was a sailing team funded by Michael Fay that challenged for the America's Cup three times between 1987 and 1992. New Zealand Challenge was the first team from New Zealand to enter the competition. 1987: KZ 7 ''Kiwi Magic'' New Zealand entered the America's Cup competition in 1984, when Marcel Fachler, a Belgian then living in Sydney, entered as a challenger following ''Australia II's'' victory. Later the campaign's director, former government minister Anthony "Aussie" Malcolm, brought in Michael Fay to help organize and finance the challenge. The team made use of former US 12 Meter ''Enterprise'' (now registered as KZ–1). Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron
The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is a New Zealand yacht club, and the club behind New Zealand's America's Cup campaigns, under the guises of New Zealand Challenge and Team New Zealand. It held the America's Cup from 1995 America's Cup, 1995 until 2003 America's Cup, 2003, becoming in 2000 America's Cup, 2000 the first non-American holder to successfully defend the trophy. After Team New Zealand's victory in the 2017 America's Cup, 2017 event, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron are the current holders of the America's Cup. ''Canada II'' is a 12-metre class yacht that competed in the 1987 Louis Vuitton Cup. The boat's designer was Bruce Kirby and the boat was built by Fred McConnell Marine, Ltd, of Parry Sound, Ontario. The boat's original home was in Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia at the Secret Cove Yacht Club. The yacht Steve Killing-designed ''True North'', which hailed from the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, was another Canadian challenger of record in 1987. PJ Phelan, a Toronto yachtsman and restaurateur, added major financial support on one condition: that both ventures merge. The Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron (RNSYS) is a yacht club, the oldest in the Americas, and is located on the Northwest Arm of Halifax Harbour in Halifax, Nova Scotia. History Originally established as the Halifax Yacht Club in 1837, the club was granted permission by Queen Victoria to use "Royal" in its name in 1861. That year, the Prince of Wales presented the club with its most prestigious trophy, the Prince of Wales Cup. In 1862, it received its first Admiralty warrant, allowing its yachts to display the blue ensign for privileges including exemption from harbour dues. On November 25, 1875, a group of yacht-owning members broke off and formed the Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, following a dispute over racing rules. Yves Pajot
Yves Pajot (born 20 April 1952) is a French sailor. He won a silver medal in the '' Flying Dutchman Class'' with his brother Marc at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Marc Pajot (born 21 September 1953, in La Baule) is a French sailor. He has been a crew member on Éric Tabarly’s boats. Noted for winning the Silver medal at the 1972 Olympics at 19 with his older brother Yves, 5 times world champion, winner of the cross-Atlantic Route du Rhum, twice semi-finalist representing France at the America’s Cup as a Project Manager and Skipper, he has been representing French sailing achievement around the world. Member of French Maritime Academy, the French Yacht Club, and the Monaco Yacht Club he is now settled in Cannes, Côte d’Azur, running a Yacht Selection activity and a consulting activity in marina landscaping. The Yacht Club Italiano is a yacht club in Genoa, Italy. History It was founded in 1879 and is one of the oldest sailing clubs in the Mediterranean. This club was bestowed Royal Patronage by HRH King Umberto I of Italy since its inception. This club has the privilege of the use of a special ensign, the "Bandiera della Marina Militare" (Italian Navy Flag). Its first regatta took place in 1880 in the Bay of La Spezia with 177 yachts.
