The ''ESV Study Bible'' (abbreviated as ESVSB) is a study Bible published by Crossway. English Standard Version
The English Standard Version (ESV) is an English translation of the Bible. Published in 2001 by Crossway, the ESV was "created by a team of more than 100 leading evangelical scholars and pastors." The ESV relies on recently published critical editions of the original Hebrew and Greek texts. Crossway claims that the ESV continues a legacy of precision and faithfulness in English translation of the original text. It describes the ESV as a translation that "emphasizes 'word-for-word' accuracy, literary excellence, and depth of meaning." It also describes the ESV as a translation that adheres to an "essentially literal" translation philosophy, taking into account "differences in grammar, syntax, and idiom between current literary English and the original languages." A study Bible is an edition of the Bible prepared for use by a serious student of the Bible. It provides scholarly information designed to help the reader gain a better understanding of and context for the text. History Perhaps the first edition of an English language Bible that qualified as a "study Bible" was the '' Geneva Bible''; it contained extensive cross-references, synopses, and doctrinal points. The text of the ''Geneva Bible'' was usually not printed without the commentary, though the Cambridge edition was printed without commentary. Vern Sheridan Poythress (born 1946) is an American philosophy, philosopher, theology, theologian, New Testament scholar and mathematician, who is currently the New Testament chair of the ESV Oversight Committee. He is also the Professor of New Testament Interpretation at Westminster Theological Seminary and editor of Westminster Theological Journal. Biography Poythress was born in Madera, California in 1946 to Ransom H. Poythress and Carola N. Poythress. He graduated from Bullard High School (Fresno, California), Bullard High School in Fresno, California. At the age of 20, Poythress earned a Bachelor of Science, B.S. in mathematics with honor (valedictorian) from California Institute of Technology, in the year 1966. Gordon Wenham
Gordon J. Wenham (; born 1943) is a Reformed British Old Testament scholar and writer. He has authored several books about the Bible. Tremper Longman has called him "one of the finest evangelical commentators today." Early life and education Wenham read theology at Cambridge University, graduating in 1965 with distinction, and completed his PhD on Deuteronomy in 1970. He has been awarded several scholarships in connection with Old Testament studies and has studied in Germany, the US, and Israel. He is the son of John Wenham and the brother of David Wenham.
