EMD GP20D
The GP20D is a four-axle B-B switcher locomotive built by MotivePower and Electro-Motive Diesel. It was supplied with a Caterpillar 3516 ''(called a 16-170B20-T2 by EMD)'' V16 prime mover which develops a total power output of . To date, only 40 units have been produced by EMD, all of which were manufactured during June 2000. The GP20D is also a hood unit with lowered long and short hoods based on MotivePower's earlier MP2000D locomotives. The changes between the MK2000D and the GP20D are primarily in the control electronics, making them easier to use than the older model. Although the GP20D is marketed as a switcher, it has a top speed of , and is usually fitted with dynamic brakes, making it suitable for road switcher duties as well. The similar appearing EMD GP15D does not have dynamic brakes. The following is a list of locomotives produced by the Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC), and its successors General Motors Electro-Motive Division (GM-EMD) and Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD). Streamlined power cars and early experimental locomotives EMC participated in the construction of a number of motorized railcars, integrated streamliner trainsets, and experimental locomotives in the 1930s. Another 10 units were manufactured for Amtrak by MotivePower during 2004. The GP15D is a hood unit with lowered long and short hoods based on MotivePower' earlier MP1500D locomotives. The changes between the MP1500D and the GP15D are primarily in the control electronics, making them easier to use than the older model. Although the GP15D was marketed as a switcher, it has a top speed of 70 mph (113 km/h), making it suitable for road switcher duties as well. A road switcher is a type of railroad locomotive designed to both haul railcars in mainline service and shunt them in railroad yards. Both type and term are North American in origin, although similar types have been used elsewhere. A road switcher must be able to operate and have good visibility in both directions. As a road engine, a road switcher must be able to operate at road speeds, with suitable power and cooling capacity. It has high-speed road trucks rather than low-speed switcher only trucks. Modern road trucks are always equipped with "frictionless" roller bearings, whereas switcher trucks were almost always equipped with "friction" plain bearings, until plain bearings were outlawed in interchange service on both railcars and locomotives. A hood unit, in North American railroad terminology, is a body style for diesel and electric locomotives where the body is less than full-width for most of its length and walkways are on the outside. In contrast, a cab unit has a full-width carbody for the length of the locomotive and walkways inside. A hood unit has sufficient visibility to be operated in both directions from a single cab. Also, the locomotive frame is the main load-bearing member, allowing the hood to be non-structural and easily opened or even removed for maintenance.
