Dubbo () is a city in the Orana Region of New South Wales, Australia. It is the largest population centre in the Orana region, with a population of 43,516 at June 2021. The city is located at the intersection of the Newell, Mitchell, and Golden highways. The nearest city, Orange, is about away. Dubbo is located roughly above sea level, north-west of Sydney ( by road) and is a major road and rail freight hub to other parts of New South Wales. It is linked by national highways north to Brisbane, south to Melbourne, east to Sydney and Newcastle, and west to Broken Hill and Adelaide. The City of Dubbo was a local government area in the Orana region of New South Wales, Australia. The former area is located adjacent to the Mitchell, Newell, and the Golden highways, the Main Western railway line, and the Macquarie River. A 2015 review of local government boundaries recommended that the City of Dubbo merge with the Wellington Council to form a new council with an area of and support a population of approximately . Newell Highway
Newell Highway is a national highway in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. It provides the major road link between southeastern Queensland and Victoria via central NSW and as such carries large amounts of freight. At in length, the Newell is the longest highway in NSW, and passes through fifteen local government areas. The highway is part of Australian national route 39 and was signposted accordingly until 2013. Since then it has been signposted as NSW route A39. Traffic volumes along Newell Highway vary from around 1,200 to 4,000 vehicles per day in rural areas. Robert Dulhunty
Robert Venour Dulhunty (1803 – 30 December 1853) is chiefly remembered as being the first permanent white settler of what has since become the City of Dubbo, in the rural heartland of the Australian state of New South Wales. Early life Robert Venour Dulhunty was born in the coastal township of Paignton, Devon, England, in 1803, to Dr John Dulhunty and Jane Smith. Jane was from West Country English stock and John's lineage was Irish in origin. The original Gaelic form of the name was O'Dulchaointigh and his forebears belonged to a sept of the O'Carroll clan situated in the province of Munster, Ireland. Gilgandra is a country town in the Orana region of New South Wales, Australia, and services the surrounding agricultural area where wheat is grown extensively together with other cereal crops, and sheep and beef cattle are raised. Sitting at the junction of the Newell, Oxley and Castlereagh highways, the town is located in a wide bend of the Castlereagh River downstream from its source near Coonabarabran, directly downstream from Mendooran, and upstream from Gulargambone and Coonamble. The ''Dubbo Dispatch'' was a newspaper published in Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia from 1865 until 1971. It has also been published as the ''Dispatch'' and the ''Dubbo Dispatch and Wellington Independent''. History The ''Dubbo Dispatch and Wellington Independent'' was first published in 1865 by Thomas Martin Manning in the Furney building in Dubbo. The newspaper would remain in the Manning family until 1920. In 1932, the newspaper briefly merged with the ''Western Age'' to form the ''Dispatch''. Golden Highway is a highway, located in the Hunter and Orana regions of New South Wales, Australia. It runs eastwards from Dubbo towards Newcastle on the coast, allowing road transport to avoid travelling over the Blue Mountains to Sydney, and is designated route B84. Route From west to east, Golden Highway runs through Dunedoo where it is concurrent with Castlereagh Highway for approximately then through Merriwa, Sandy Hollow, Denman, Jerrys Plains and Mount Thorley, joining New England Highway at Belford, south of Singleton.
