Drawing Restraint 9 (album)
''The Music from Matthew Barney's Drawing Restraint 9'' is the second soundtrack album by Björk, released on 25 July 2005 in the UK and on 23 August 2005 in the US. It was composed for Matthew Barney for his film of the same title. The album was re-released in 2006 as a DualDisc including new DTS 96/24 5.1-channel surround sound mixes on the DVD-audio side, plus the extra track "Petrolatum". The DualDisc also formed part of the '' Surrounded'' box set. Background For the composing of the soundtrack, Björk traveled to Japan to study ancient Japanese music. Several tracks are made with the sound of the shō, a Japanese instrument which contains 16 various reeds; Mayumi Miyata plays the shō on multiple compositions in the soundtrack and appears in the film playing the instrument. "Holographic Entrypoint" features a Noh score and vocal performance by Shiro Nomura, which complements a climactic scene in the film. Mayumi Miyata
is a Japanese player of the '' shō'', a traditional Japanese mouth organ. Miyata was born on April 1, 1954, in Tokyo and graduated from the Kunitachi College of Music, where she majored in piano. While in school, she began studying '' gagaku'' music from Ono Tadamaro of the Imperial Household Agency. Although the ''shō'' is generally associated with Japan's ancient ''gagaku'' court music, Miyata was among the first players of the instrument to specialize in contemporary classical music. She plays a specially constructed instrument with extra pipes, allowing for the use of more chromaticism. The US composer John Cage (1912–1992) composed a number of works for Miyata just before his death. Cage met her during the 1990 Darmstadt summer course. Vincent Akira Rabelais Carté is an American composer, poet, software programmer and experimental multimedia artist. He is most known for his 2004 record on Samadhi Sound, '' Spellewauerynsherde'', as well as his experimental audio processing software Argeïphontes Lyre, and his works which take inspiration from magic realism. Career and artistry Rabelais began his career on the record label Ritornell, until in 2004 when David Sylvian signed him to his record label Samadhi Sound. In 2004, Rabelais released his now cult classic record ''Spellewauerynsherde'' to critical acclaim on the label. The record reportedly samples traditional Icelandic a cappella lament songs. It was reissued on multiple vinyl editions for the first time by Boomkat Editions in 2017. "Declare Independence" is a song written and recorded by Icelandic singer Björk. The track was released as the third single from her sixth full-length studio album, '' Volta''. The single was released on 1 January 2008. Björk's dedication of the song to various independence causes at live performances of the song in Shanghai and Tokyo have caused controversy. ''Volta'' is the sixth studio album by Icelandic singer Björk, released on 1 May 2007 by One Little Indian Records. A wide array of artists collaborated with Björk on material for the album, including longtime collaborator Mark Bell, along with new producers Timbaland and Danja. The album received positive reviews upon its initial release, and is Björk's first and only album to reach the top 10 on the US ''Billboard'' 200, peaking at number nine. ''Volta'' spent nine weeks at number one on the US Top Electronic Albums chart and in the first three months of release sold over half a million copies worldwide. ''Vespertine'' is the fourth studio album by Icelandic recording artist Björk. It was released on 27 August 2001 in the United Kingdom by One Little Independent Records and in the United States by Elektra Entertainment. Production on the album began during the filming of ''Dancer in the Dark''. Zeena Parkins (born 1956) is an American composer and multi-instrumentalist active in experimental, free improvised, contemporary classical, and avant-jazz music; she is known for having "reinvented the harp". Parkins performs on standard harps, several custom electric harps, piano, and accordion. She is a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow and professor in the Music Department at Mills College. Leila Arab ( fa, لیلا عرب, born in 1971), professionally known as Leila, is an Iranian-born record producer and DJ based in London, England. She has released music on the labels Rephlex Records, Rephlex, XL Recordings, XL and Warp (record label), Warp. She has also worked extensively with Icelandic singer Björk. Biography Arab was born in Pahlavi Iran and spent part of her childhood there. Her family fled to London following the Iranian Revolution in 1979.
