Don Cowie (sailor)
Don Cowie, born 5 January 1962 in Palmerston North, New Zealand, is a former competitive sailor who won a silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Cowie teamed with ex-American Rod Davis in the Star class to finish second to the American crew. He again sailed with Davis as part of the New Zealand Challenge at the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup. Cowie and Davis finished fifth at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and were also fifth in the Soling class at Sydney along with 3rd crewman Alan Smith. Cowie was the yachting section team leader for New Zealand at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. In international keelboat racing Cowie has been in winning teams in the Kenwood Cup (for Japan). Cowie was part of Willi Illbruck's successful Pinta crew, winning the 1993 and 1994 One Ton Cup (for Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, New Zealand) and the 1993 Admiral's Cup (for Germany). The sport of sailing involves a variety of competitive sailing formats that are sanctioned through various sailing federations and yacht clubs. The 2007 America's Cup was the thirty-second challenge for the America's Cup and was won by Alinghi in the 7th race. Team New Zealand or TNZ is a sailing team based in Auckland, New Zealand representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. The 30th America's Cup was won by Team New Zealand, who swept the 2000 Louis Vuitton Cup winner Prada Challenge in all five races. It was the first America's Cup without an American challenger or defender. Luna Rossa Challenge
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, originally named Prada Challenge, then Luna Rossa Challenge, is an Italian sailboat racing syndicate first created to compete for the 2000 America's Cup. It won the Louis Vuitton Cup on their first attempt in 2000, but then lost the America's Cup match against the defending champion team, Team New Zealand. Luna Rossa challenged again for the 2003 America's Cup but was knocked out in the semi-finals stage of the Louis Vuitton Cup. In the 2007 America's Cup, held in Valencia, Spain, the team reached the final of the Louis Vuitton Cup but was again defeated by Team New Zealand. Admiral's Cup
The Admiral's Cup was an international yachting regatta. For many years it was known as the unofficial world championship of offshore racing. The Admiral's Cup regatta was started in 1957 and was normally a biennial event (occurring in odd-numbered years) which was competed for between national teams. However the event was not staged in 2001 and was last held in 2003. It was cancelled at short notice in 2005. The 2003 event did not follow the normal format and allowed entries from any yacht club affiliated to a national authority, thus allowing the possibility of several teams per country. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is a New Zealand yacht club, and the club behind New Zealand's America's Cup campaigns, under the guises of New Zealand Challenge and Team New Zealand.
