Domingo García (politician)
Domingo García is an American lawyer and politician. He serves as the 51st President of League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). He previously served as a member of the Dallas City Council, Mayor Pro Tem of Dallas, and a member of the Texas House of Representatives. He was elected the president of LULAC in 2018. Early life and career García earned Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Texas in 1980 and his Juris Doctor from Texas Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston in 1983. He then worked as a personal injury lawyer. Political career García was first elected to the Dallas City Council in 1991 and served until 1995. He was elected Mayor Pro Tem of Dallas in 1993 and became the first Latino to hold that post. He served in the Texas House of Representatives for three terms. LULAC
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is the largest and oldest Hispanic and Latin-American civil rights organization in the United States. It was established on February 17, 1929, in Corpus Christi, Texas, largely by Hispanics returning from World War I who sought to end ethnic discrimination against Latinos in the United States. The goal of LULAC is to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health, and civil rights of Hispanic people in the United States. LULAC uses nationwide councils and group community organizations to achieve all these goals. LULAC has about 132,000 members in the United States. Undocumented youth in the United States are young people living in the United States without U.S. citizenship or other legal immigration status. An estimated 1.1 million undocumented minors resided in the U.S. as of 2010, making up 16% of the undocumented population of 11 million. Undocumented students face unique legal uncertainties and limitations within the United States educational system. They are sometimes called the 1.5 generation (as opposed to first- or second-generation), as they have spent a majority of their lives in the United States. Children have the legal right to public a K–12 education regardless of immigration status due to the 1982 US Supreme Court ruling in Plyler v. Doe. The 2012 United States House of Representatives elections in Texas were held on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, to elect the 36 U.S. representatives from the state of Texas—an increase of four seats in reapportionment following the 2010 United States Census. The elections coincided with the elections of other federal and state offices, including a quadrennial presidential election and an election for the U.S. Senate. The primary election had been scheduled to be held on March 6, 2012, with a runoff election on May 22; because of problems arising from redistricting, the primary was postponed to May 29, and the run-off to July 31. With 58% of voting age people turning out, all existing seats were held by their respective parties with one exception, the Democrats picking up the 23rd District. The 2002 Dallas mayoral special election took place on January 19 and February 16, 2002, to elect the mayor of Dallas, Texas. The Texas State University System (TSUS) was created in 1911 to oversee the state's normal schools. Since its creation it has broadened its focus and comprises institutions of many different scopes. The other systems of state universities are the Texas A&M System, the Texas Tech System, the University of Houston System, the University of North Texas System, and the University of Texas System.
