2002 Dallas Mayoral Special Election
The 2002 Dallas mayoral special election took place on January 19 and February 16, 2002, to elect the mayor of Dallas, Texas. It was triggered after Ron Kirk declared his intent to resign as mayor so he could focus on running in the 2002 United States Senate election in Texas. The race was officially nonpartisan. Since no candidate secured a majority in the first round, a runoff was held between the top-two finishers. Laura Miller won the election. Laura Miller (politician)
Laura Miller (born November 18, 1958) is an American journalist and politician who served as the 58th mayor of Dallas, Texas from 2002 through 2007. She decided not to run for re-election in 2007. She was the third woman to serve as mayor of Dallas. Early life Laura Miller was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Career Journalism Miller spent the early part of her career as a journalist working as a staff writer for ''The Miami Herald'' and ''The Dallas Morning News'' and then as a columnist for the ''New York Daily News'' and the now-defunct ''Dallas Times Herald''. In 1991, Miller became an investigative reporter for the ''Dallas Observer'' and then a columnist for ''D Magazine''. Domingo García (politician)
Domingo García is an American lawyer and politician. He serves as the 51st President of League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). He previously served as a member of the Dallas City Council, Mayor Pro Tem of Dallas, and a member of the Texas House of Representatives. He was elected the president of LULAC in 2018. Early life and career García earned Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Texas in 1980 and his Juris Doctor from Texas Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston in 1983. He then worked as a personal injury lawyer. Political career García was first elected to the Dallas City Council in 1991 and served until 1995. Ron Kirk
Ronald Kirk (born June 27, 1954) is an American lawyer, politician and member of the Democratic Party who served as the United States Trade Representative from 2009 to 2013 and the 57th Mayor of Dallas from 1995 to 2002. Born in Austin, Texas, Kirk is a graduate of Austin's John H. Reagan High School, Austin College, and the University of Texas School of Law. From 1994 to 1995, Kirk worked as the Secretary of State of Texas, until he was elected as the Mayor of Dallas, where he served from 1995 to 2002 and was the first African-American to hold either of those positions. He ran for the United States Senate in 2002, but was defeated by Republican opponent John Cornyn.
