Texas State University System
The Texas State University System (TSUS) was created in 1911 to oversee the state's normal schools. Since its creation it has broadened its focus and comprises institutions of many different scopes. The other systems of state universities are the Texas A&M System, the Texas Tech System, the University of Houston System, the University of North Texas System, and the University of Texas System. The system is unique in Texas because it is the only horizontal state university system in the state; the System does not have a flagship institution and considers all colleges and universities to be equal partners receiving the same level of support from the system. Sul Ross State University
Sul Ross State University (SRSU) is a public university in Alpine, Texas. The main campus is the primary institution of higher education serving the nineteen-county Big Bend region of far West Texas. Branch campuses, branded as Rio Grande College, are located in Del Rio, Uvalde, Eagle Pass, and Castroville. Big Bend National Park
Big Bend National Park is an American national park located in West Texas, bordering Mexico. The park has national significance as the largest protected area of Chihuahuan Desert topography and ecology in the United States, and was named after a large bend in the Rio Grande/Río Bravo. The park protects more than 1,200 species of plants, more than 450 species of birds, 56 species of reptiles, and 75 species of mammals. Additional park activities include scenic drives, programs led by Big Bend park rangers, and stargazing. The area has a rich cultural history, from archeological sites dating back nearly 10,000 years to more recent pioneers, ranchers, and miners. Christmas Mountains (Texas)
The Christmas Mountains are a small range of mountains next to Big Bend National Park in Brewster County, Texas, United States. The highest peak is above sea level. The 9,270-acre tract is owned by the Texas State University System and is open to the public and to academic researchers studying the area's natural resources. The area's shallow, stony soils support oak, juniper, mesquite, chaparral, various cacti, and grasses. The Richard K. Mellon Foundation, through the Conservation Fund, donated the Christmas Mountains to the State of Texas in 1991 for use as or inclusion in a nature park, wildlife refuge, recreational area or similarly designated use area. Lamar University System
The Lamar University System was a state university system established in 1983 with four existing institutions: the flagship Lamar University, and the member institutions Lamar State College–Port Arthur, Lamar State College–Orange (both two-year community colleges), and Lamar Institute of Technology. The System and its member institutions were all named for Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas, called "The Father of Texas Education," who had provided for land allocations in each county for schools, as well as for two universities. But the public school system was not fully established until 1869 under the Reconstruction era legislature, which provided a funding mechanism. Port Arthur, Texas
Port Arthur is a city in Jefferson County within the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area of the U.S. state of Texas. A small, uninhabited portion extends into Orange County; it is east of Houston. The largest oil refinery in the United States, the Motiva Refinery, is located in Port Arthur. The population of Port Arthur was 53,818 at the 2010 census, down from 57,755 at the 2000 census. By 2020, its population rebounded to 56,039. Early attempts at settlements in the area had all failed. However, in 1895, Arthur Stilwell founded Port Arthur, and the town quickly grew. Orange is a city and the county seat of Orange County, Texas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 19,324. Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) is a public technical school in Beaumont, Texas. LIT was formerly a part of Lamar University, but became a separate institution when the university joined the Texas State University System in 1995. History Lamar Institute of Technology was chartered in 1949 when the Lamar College Bill was passed. The bill was sponsored in the Texas Legislature by State Representative Jack Brooks and Senator W.R. Cousins, Jr. of Beaumont. LIT began as the Division of Vocations within Lamar College.
