Martyn Jerel Buchwald (January 30, 1942 – September 27, 2018), known as Marty Balin (), was an American singer, songwriter, and musician best known as the founder/leader and one of the lead singers and songwriters of Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship. Early life Balin was born Martyn Jerel Buchwald in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Catherine Eugenia "Jean" (née Talbot) and Joseph Buchwald. His paternal grandparents emigrated from Eastern Europe. His father was Jewish and his mother was Episcopalian. Buchwald attended Washington High School in San Francisco, California. As a child, Balin was diagnosed with autism. Career Early musical work In 1962, Buchwald changed his name to Marty Balin, and began recording with Challenge Records, releasing the singles "Nobody But You" and "I Specialize in Love". Pop Rock
Pop rock (also typeset as pop/rock) is a fusion genre with an emphasis on professional songwriting and recording craft, and less emphasis on attitude than rock music. EMI America Records was started in 1978 by EMI as a second US label next to Capitol Records. It absorbed Liberty Records in 1984. Jesse Barish is a musician and composer, most notable for writing the song " Count On Me" for Jefferson Starship; and several songs for Marty Balin, the former lead vocalist of Jefferson Starship including: " Hearts", " Atlanta Lady (Something About Your Love)", and " Do It for Love". He was a known flutist and played flute with the seminal experimental band The Orkustra in San Francisco in the mid-1960s, and with John Phillips on Phillips' Wolf King of L.A. tour. In 1971, Barish was signed to Shelter Records by Denny Cordell and released the album ''Jesse, Wolff and Whings'' with guitarist Billy Wolff and drummer Kevin Kelley, who played with The Byrds and Rising Sons. Val Garay (born May 9, 1942, in San Francisco, California, United States) is an American recording engineer and record producer who has worked with Kim Carnes, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, and others. Garay also co-founded Los Angeles recording studio Record One. Career Garay, the son of well-known Latin singer the late Joaquin Garay and grandson Joaquin Garay III grew up in Burlingame, California, where he graduated from Burlingame High School. A songwriter and guitarist, Garay left behind studies at Stanford University School of Medicine to pursue a career as a professional musician. In the mid-1970s Garay's manager, Michael J. Gruber, introduced him to engineer and producer David Hassinger, founder of The Sound Factory recording studio in Hollywood. The ''Billboard'' Hot 100 is the music industry standard record chart in the United States for songs, published weekly by '' Billboard'' magazine. Chart rankings are based on sales (physical and digital), radio play, and online streaming in the United States.
