Diesel Loco Shed, Visakhapatnam is an engine shed located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh in India. Diesel Locomotive Shed, Visakhapatnam (DLS/VSKP) was established on 2 May 1965 with a holding of 13 WDM 1 Locomotives to meet the traffic needs in transportation of mainly Iron Ore from Bailadilla Mines to Visakhapatnam Port trust. It is administered by the Waltair Railway division in the East Coast Railway zone. History Since its establishment in 1965 and the holding of the shed kept on increasing in capacity. Operations It is the biggest Diesel Loco Shed in Indian Railways having a capacity to hold more than 300 locos, and the largest in Asia based on that capacity. It mainly provided Diesel locos to the unelectrified sections of ECoR and sections of SCoR. Diesel Loco Shed, Golden Rock is an engine shed located in Golden Rock, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu in India. It is located north of Golden Rock railway station, falling under Tiruchirappalli railway division. It is the largest of the four locomotive shed under the Southern Railway zone of Indian Railways. History and developments The foundation stone for the shed was laid on the 25th of December, 1971 by the then Railway Minister, K. Hanumanthaiah. Visakhapatnam Port is one of 13 major ports in India and the only major port of Andhra Pradesh. The WDM-1 was the first class of Wide Gauge (W), Diesel powered (D), Mixed load (M), meant for hauling both freight and passenger trains. These are also the first mainline diesel engines imported after Independence. They were even the fastest diesel locomotives till the advent of WDM 2 and WDM 4. South Coast Railway Zone
South Coast Railway Zone (SCoR) has been announced as the newest railway zone of the Indian Railways and is headquartered at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The formal notification for operationalization of this Zone is yet to be issued. Jurisdiction South Coast Railway will be headquartered at Visakhapatnam and have three divisions.
