Demotix
Demotix was a photo agency that enabled freelance photojournalists to license their photos to mainstream media organisations, charities, and stock image buyers. Initially conceived as a free speech platform to allow local journalists to report their own stories to a global audience, the company was launched in January 2009 by CEO Turi Munthe (Founder Parlia) and COO Jonathan Tepper and was based in London, UK. History Demotix opened in beta in July 2008 and launched publicly in January 2009. The agency was previously to be known as "Nyouz", but this name was discarded in favour of Demotix. Since its foundation, Demotix has announced partnership agreements with a variety of other news organisations, including Global Voices Online, the Press Association, and Corbis Images. Turi Munthe
Turi Munthe FRSA (born 1976) is an Anglo-French journalist and entrepreneur. He is the founder of Demotix, which became the largest network of photojournalists in the world, as well as Parlia, an encyclopaedia of opinion. Education Munthe studied Arabic and History at Oxford, Hebrew at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and dropped out of a PhD at NYU in Anthropology of Religion to start a (failed) biofuels business in Ghana. Work Munthe began his career with IBTauris, while writing for the British and US press on Middle East politics. He published ''The Saddam Hussein Reader'', before covering the 2nd Gulf War as a freelance journalist. He then launched The Beirut Review, a cultural magazine published with the Daily Star under Rami Khouri, before returning to London as Head of the Middle East Programme at the Royal United Services Institute. Parlia
Parlia is an encyclopedia of opinion, a project looking to map all of the world's opinions. The name Parlia is derived from the Old English word for negotiation, to "parley." The project was founded by Turi Munthe and J. Paul Neeley. Turi Munthe previously founded Demotix, at the time the "world’s largest network of photojournalists" which sold to Corbis, a Bill Gates company, in 2013. J. Paul Neeley previously founded Yossarian Lives. Parlia is not a debate site, but looking to "showcasing all opinions in a calm, descriptive voice."
