Dave Baker (Minnesota Politician)
Dave Baker (born March 27, 1962) is an American politician serving as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives since 2015. A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota, Baker represents District 16B in west-central Minnesota, which includes the city of Willmar and parts of Kandiyohi County. Early life and education Baker was raised in Hamel, Minnesota. He attended Aitkin High School and the St. Cloud Area Vocational Technical Institute. Minnesota House of Representatives Baker was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2014, defeating incumbent Mary Sawatsky, and has been reelected every two years since. During the 2015-16 legislative session Baker served as an assistant majority leader. Since 2021 he has served as an assistant minority leader. Mary Sawatzky
Mary Sawatzky (born February 7, 1961) is a Minnesota politician and former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), she represented District 17B in west-central Minnesota. She is currently teaching as a teacher of the deaf (hard-of-hearing) at Willmar Senior High School in Minnesota. Education Sawatzky attended St. Cloud State University, graduating in 1984 with a B.S. in special education and elementary education. She was a special education teacher at New London–Spicer Senior High School from 1985 to 1986. When she left her job later that year, she started working in Willmar Public Schools as a learning disability teacher until 2018. Willmar is a city in, and the county seat of, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 21,015 at the 2020 census. History Agricultural expansion and the establishment of Willmar as a division point on the Great Northern Railway determined its growth. The first settlers arrived during the 1850s, attracted to the fertile land and an abundance of timber and game. The Dakota War of 1862 left the township abandoned for several years. The advent of the railroad in Kandiyohi County in 1869 brought new settlers. Many were of Swedish and Norwegian origin; residents of Scandinavian heritage are still a majority. In 1870, Leon (Chadwick) Willmar, a Belgian acting as an agent for the European bondholder of the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, purchased the title to Section 1 of Willmar Township. Kandiyohi County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, its population is 43,732. As of November 20, 1871, its county seat is Willmar. Kandiyohi County comprises the US Census Bureau's "Willmar, MN Micropolitan Statistical Area". History Kandiyohi County is named for a Dakota word meaning "where the buffalo fish come". (''kandi’'' - the buffalo fish + ''oh-hi’-yu'' - v. of ''hiyu'' - to come through). It was organized on March 20, 1858, with Kandiyohi established as the county seat in 1870 (it was then called Kandiyohi Station, as it was merely a stop on the railroad line).
