Dasyueshan
Mount Daxue () is a mountain in Taiwan along the Xueshan Range with an elevation of . The Dasyueshan National Forest Recreation Area in Heping District, Taichung, contains a section of Dasyueshan, consisting of several shorter peaks, with Siaosyueshan (Little Snow Mountain) being the tallest at 2997m. Formerly a logging area, many of the affected areas have been reforested and it has become a popular scenic destination and birdwatching spot. Heping District, Taichung
Heping District () is a mountain indigenous district in eastern Taichung, Taiwan, and it is the largest district of Taichung City. It is also the largest district in Taiwan by area. It is the geographic center of Taiwan. History After the handover of Taiwan from Japan to the Republic of China in 1945, Heping was organized as a Mountain indigenous township of Taichung County. On 7 June 1973, two northeast most villages of the township were separated to form a new county-level division, which was Lishan Constructing Administrative Bureau (). However, the bureau was dissolved on 18 February 1982 and the two villages were returned to the township. On 25 December 2010, Taichung County was merged with Taichung City and Heping was upgraded to a district of the city. Swinhoe's Pheasant
Swinhoe's pheasant (''Lophura swinhoii''), also known as the Taiwan blue pheasant, is a bird of the pheasant subfamily in the fowl family Phasianidae. It is endemic to Taiwan. Along with the Mikado pheasant and Taiwan blue magpie, two other Taiwan endemics, Swinhoe's pheasant is sometimes considered an unofficial national symbol for Taiwan, as it bears the colours of the national flag (red, white, and blue). Etymology The bird was named after British naturalist Robert Swinhoe, who first described the species in 1862. Locally, the species is known in Mandarin as ''lánfùxián'' (), and in Taiwanese Hokkien as ''wa-koe'' (; also ). Description The male Swinhoe's pheasant can grow up to 79 cm. Miaoli County
Miaoli County (Mandarin Pinyin: ''miáo lì xiàn''; Hakka PFS: ''Mèu-li̍t-yen''; Hokkien POJ: ''Biâu-le̍k-koān'' or ''Miâu-le̍k-koān'') is a county in western Taiwan. Miaoli is adjacent with Hsinchu County and Hsinchu City to the north, Taichung to the south, and borders the Taiwan Strait to the west. 100 Peaks Of Taiwan
The Baiyue (Mandarin: 臺灣百岳; Pīnyīn: Táiwān bǎiyuè) is a list of one hundred mountain peaks in Taiwan. They were chosen by a group of prominent Taiwanese hikers from mountain peaks known at the time to be over 3,000 meters in height. The selection criteria included uniqueness, danger, height, beauty and prominence. Preference was also given to peaks already named and those with triangulation points. As such, "Top" does not refer strictly to the highest peaks by elevation, but rather peaks most worth hiking. The list was intended to promote enthusiasm for high-altitude hiking in Taiwan. In the resulting list of one hundred peaks, 69 peaks were in the Central Mountain Range, the largest of Taiwan's five principal mountain ranges, while 19 were in the Xueshan Range, and 12 were in the Yushan Range. Mikado Pheasant
The Mikado pheasant (''Syrmaticus mikado'') is a gamebird in the pheasant family Phasianidae of the order Galliformes, gallinaceous birds. Sometimes considered an unofficial ''national bird'' of Taiwan (along with the Swinhoe's pheasant and Taiwan blue magpie), a pair of Mikado pheasants and Yushan National Park, one of the areas it is known to inhabit, is depicted in the 1000 dollar bill of the New Taiwan dollar. Distribution and habitat The Mikado pheasant is endemic to mountainous regions of Taiwan. The species occupies dense shrubs, bamboo growth and grassy terrain with conifer overstory in central and southern Taiwan, from 2000 to 3200 meters above sea level. Taiwan Partridge
The Taiwan partridge or Taiwan hill partridge (''Arborophila crudigularis'') is a species of bird in the family Phasianidae. It is found only in Taiwan, and its natural habitat is broadleaf forests. It is threatened by habitat loss, but at present is categorised by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as being of least concern. Taxonomy Robert Swinhoe described this species in 1864, proposing that it belongs to a new genus, ''Oreoperdix''. The bird had an "ugly raw-looking red patch on the throat". Swinhoe initially thought that the bird was injured, but found that the patch was natural after close examination. The red patch probably exists only in the breeding season. A monotypic species, it is now placed in the genus ''Arborophila''. The specific name ''crudigularis'' is from the Latin words for "bleeding" and "throated".
