Painting
Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a solid surface (called the "matrix" or "support"). The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. In art, the term ''painting ''describes both the act and the result of the action (the final work is called "a painting"). The support for paintings includes such surfaces as walls, paper, canvas, wood, glass, lacquer, pottery, leaf, copper and concrete, and the painting may incorporate multiple other materials, including sand, clay, paper, plaster, gold leaf, and even whole objects. Emil Bærentzen
Emilius Ditlev Bærentzen, usually known as Emil Bærentzen (30 October 1799 – 14 February 1868) was a Danish portrait painter and lithographer, active during the Golden Age of Danish Painting. He founded Em. Bærentzen & Co. Biography Born in Copenhagen on 30 October 1799, Bærentzen served an apprenticeship at the pharmacy in Nykøbing Sjælland but then travelled to Christiansted on the then Danish island of St. Croix in the West Indies where he worked in one of the government offices. Five years later he returned to Denmark and, after qualifying as a lawyer, moved into painting which until then he had practiced as a hobby. In 1821, he entered the Danish Academy where he studied under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. He was awarded the little silver medal in 1826 and the large silver medal the following year. Victor Brockdorff
Arthur Victor Schack von Brockdorff, generally known as Victor Brockdorff, (October 11, 1911 – February 25, 1992) was a Danish painter who joined the artists' colony known as the Odsherred Painters in Northwestern Zealand in the early 1930s. He was a cofounder of the Corner painters, Corner Artists' Association. Biography The son of a shipmaster, Brockdorff was born in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen. After studying privately under Ernst Zeuthen and Olivia Holm Møller from 1926 to 1929, he studied graphic art under Aksel Jørgensen at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (1931–34). He debuted at the Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling (autumn exhibition) at Den Frie Udstilling, Den Frie in 1930, and was a co-founder of the Corner Exhibition in 1932 where he frequently exhibited. Peter Brandes
Peter Brandes (born 5 March 1944 in Assens, Denmark) is a Danish painter, sculptor, ceramic artist and photographer. Brandes' art is abstract and often in brown colours. He had his breakthrough as artist in the beginning of the 1980s. He has, ''inter alia'', done artwork on Roskilde Domkirke and mosaic (colored glass) windows in a church at Nordkap and the church Village of Hope, south of Los Angeles.''Interview: Peter Brandes'' Af Sonja Sabinsky. Jørgen Boberg
Jørgen Boberg (24 October 1940 – 24 August 2009) was a self-taught Surrealist Danish painter and illustrator. Biography Born in Roskilde, Boberg was a self-taught artist. After first exhibiting at the Artists Autumn Exhibition (''Kunstneres Efterårsudstilling'') in 1962, he was associated with Copenhagen's Galleri Passepartout and became a founding member of the Passepartout artists association in 1964. When in Paris in the mid-1960s, he became acquainted with Surrealistic painting which he interpreted in his own style. Boberg was a leading representative of Danish Surrealism, creating both figure paintings and landscapes with a high level of technical perfection. From 1973, he was a member of Grønningen. Lars Bo
Lars Bo (29 May 1924 in Kolding – 21 October 1999 in Paris) was a Danish artist and writer. He is known for his graphic works with surrealistically inspired fantastic motifs. He was nicknamed "Wizard". Lars Bo worked with P. Rostrup Bøyesen at Statens Museum for Kunst in the period from 1939 to 1940, and he went to The Danish Design School from 1941 to 1943, after which he travelled in Europe. From 1947 until his death in 1999 he lived in Paris. From 1948 to 1950 Lars Bo worked in Johnny Friedläender and Albert Flocons graphic studio in Paris. Lars Bo wrote the novel ''Det vidunderlige hus i Paris'' (The Wonderful House in Paris). Lars Bo moved to Paris in the early 1950s to study art and printmaking techniques at the famous Atelier 17, under the directorship of Stanley William Hayter. Carl Heinrich Bloch
Carl Heinrich Bloch (23 May 1834 – 22 February 1890) was a Danish artist. Biography He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and studied there at the Royal Danish Academy of Art (''Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi'') under Wilhelm Marstrand. Bloch's parents wanted their son to enter what they considered to be a respectable profession - an officer in the Navy. This, however, was not what he wanted. His only interest was drawing and painting, and he was consumed by the idea of becoming an artist. Christian Gottlieb Vilhelm Bissen
Christian Gottlieb Vilhelm Bissen (5 August 1836 – 20 April 1913) was a Danish sculptor. He was also a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts with great influence on the next generation of Danish sculptors and for a while served as its director. Bissen was trained in the Neoclassical tradition from Bertel Thorvaldsen but after a stay in Paris around 1880, he was influenced by Naturalism. With the equestrian statue of Absalon he turned to Neo-romanticism. Ejler Bille
Ejler Bille (6 March 1910 – 1 May 2004) was a Danish artist. Biography Ejler Bille was born in Odder, Denmark. He was the son of Torben Holger Bille and Anna Kirstine Lysabild Jensen. Bille graduated from Birkerød State School in 1930, and then studied at the arts and craft school (''Kunsthåndværkerskolen'') in Copenhagen with Bizzie Høyer 1930–1932 and the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 1933. In 1931, he made his debut at the Artists' Autumn Exhibition (''Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling''). Bille joined Linien in 1934, Corner in 1940 and CoBrA in 1949. Albert Bertelsen
Albert Bertelsen (17 November 1921 – 10 December 2019) was a Danish autodidact painter and graphic artist. Biography Bertelsen was born in Vejle. Bertelsen is primarily known for his landscape paintings and graphic works in green colours. His work often feature the Faroe Islands, but France, Iceland and Norway have also provided him with inspiration. Bertelsen also made object studies and humorous portraits. He states that these are often people he has met as a child, and he attempted to paint them as though seen through a child's eyes. Wilhelm Bendz
Wilhelm Ferdinand Bendz (20 March 1804 – 14 November 1832) was a Danish painter mainly known for genre works and portraits which often portray his artist colleagues and their daily lives. He was one of the most talented artists in the successful generation of painters who studied under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg but died early and has therefore left a relatively small oeuvre. Biography Early life and education Wilhelm Bendz was born on 20 March 1804 in Odense on the island of Funen. He was sent to Copenhagen where he attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1820 to 1825, where he studied under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg.
