DH.88 Comet
The de Havilland DH.88 Comet is a British two-seat, twin-engined aircraft built by the de Havilland Aircraft Company. It was developed specifically to participate in the 1934 England-Australia MacRobertson Air Race from the United Kingdom to Australia. Development of the Comet was seen as both a prestige project and an entry into the use of modern techniques. It was designed around the specific requirements of the race. Despite being made of wood, it was the first British aircraft to incorporate in one airframe all the elements of the modern high speed aircraft - stressed-skin construction, cantilever monoplane flying surfaces, retractable undercarriage, landing flaps, variable-pitch propellers and an enclosed cockpit. Three Comets were produced for the race, all for private owners at the discounted price of £5,000 per aircraft. Arthur Octavius Edwards
Arthur Octavius Edwards (1876–1960) was an English builder, property developer and hotel manager best known for building the Grosvenor House Hotel in London in the 1920s. Edwards was born in 1876 in Ripley, Derbyshire, the son of Edgar James and Ellen Edwards; his father was a civil engineer. He first worked in a drawing office in Westminster before moving to Ceylon to work on building Railways. On his turn to England he was involved in the re-building of the Savoy Hotel. With a "considerable professional ability and a shrewd eye" for business he soon gained interests in South Africa and the United States. Edwards built the Grosvenor House Hotel in the 1920s and it opened in 1929 on the site of Grosvenor House, the former London residence of the Dukes of Westminster, whose family name is Grosvenor. Magnesium
Magnesium is a chemical element with the symbol Mg and atomic number 12. It is a shiny gray metal having a low density, low melting point and high chemical reactivity. Gipsy Six
The de Havilland Gipsy Six is a British six-cylinder, air-cooled, inverted inline piston engine developed by the de Havilland Engine Company for aircraft use in the 1930s. It was based on the cylinders of the four-cylinder Gipsy Major and went on to spawn a whole series of similar aero engines that were still in common use until the 1980s. The engines were of particular note for their exceptionally low cross-sectional area, a drag-reducing feature which made them ideal for the many racing aircraft of that period.
