Dzidra Uztupe-Karamiševa
Dzidra Uztupe-Karamiševa ( ''née'' Uztupe; 2 May 1930 – 27 December 2014) was a Latvian basketball player and coach. During her career Uztupe-Karamiševa won three FIBA European Champions Cups and four Soviet League titles. She represented the Soviet Union national team and won four EuroBasket tournaments. Career Uztupe was born on 2 May 1930 in Smiltene, Latvia, and spent her youth in the Pārdaugava area of Riga. She attended the Riga Secondary School No. 5 where she took up basketball, volleyball and track and field. She held the Latvian record in high jump among girls and was the champion in both high jump and volleyball. Uztupe joined Daugava Riga in 1947 and played with the team until 1958. Smiltene
Smiltene () is a town in the Vidzeme region in northern Latvia, 132 km northeast of the capital Riga, and the administrative centre of Smiltene Municipality. It has a population of 5,536 (2015). Name Its original name was Smiltesele (the ending probably came from the Russian "selo" - village), later it was called Smilten in German before adding the Latvian ending and thus becoming Smiltene. Geography Smiltene is located in the northern part of the Vidzeme Highland on the banks of the river Abuls (Abula). It was formerly in Valka District prior to the reorganization of 2009, which eliminated districts, and placed the town as part of Smiltene Municipality. EuroBasket Women 1952
The 1952 European Women Basketball Championship was the 3rd regional championship held by FIBA Europe for women. The competition was held in Moscow, Soviet Union, on the Central Dynamo Stadium and took place May 18–25, 1952. The Soviet Union won their second gold medal in a row, with Czechoslovakia and Hungary winning silver and bronze, respectively. High Jump
The high jump is a track and field event in which competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it. In its modern, most-practiced format, a bar is placed between two standards with a crash mat for landing. Since ancient times, competitors have introduced increasingly effective techniques to arrive at the current form, and the current universally preferred method is the Fosbury Flop, in which athletes run towards the bar and leap head first with their back to the bar. The discipline is, alongside the pole vault, one of two vertical clearance events in the Olympic athletics program. Track and field is a sport that includes athletic contests based on running, jumping, and throwing skills. Volleyball
Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964. Beach volleyball was introduced to the programme at the Atlanta 1996. Pārdaugava (literally means "Trans" or "Over" -Daugava area) is an area most often associated with Riga, composed of several neighbourhoods on the west (left) bank of Daugava River. The name is literally translated as 'over Daugava'. The competition was held in Mulhouse, France and took place on September 22–29, 1962.
