Henri Duponchel
Henri Duponchel (28 July 1794 – 8 April 1868) was in turn a French architect, interior designer, costume designer, stage designer, stage director, managing director of the Paris Opera, and a silversmith. He has often been confused with Charles-Edmond Duponchel, a contemporary who also lived and worked in Paris. Early life and training as a painter He was born Henry Duponchel on the rue des Lombards in Paris to Pierre-Henry Duponchel (c. 1752 – 18 October 1821), who ran a grocery-hardware store, and Marie-Geneviève-Victoire Théronenne (d. 8 August 1842). The family subsequently moved to the rue Sainte-Croix de la Bretonnerie. According to early biographies Duponchel took lessons from the painter and theatre enthusiast Pierre Guérin and was a fellow student with Eugène Delacroix. Philogène Auguste Joseph Duponchel
Philogène Auguste Joseph Duponchel (1774 – 10 January 1846) was a French soldier and entomologist. Life and career Philogène Auguste Joseph Duponchel was born in 1774 in Valenciennes, Nord, and died on 10 January 1846 in Paris. After studies in Douai, he joined the French Army when he was sixteen years old and took part in the campaigns of 1795 and 1796. Retiring from the army, he worked afterwards as a government administrator stationed in Paris. He was forced to retire again in 1816, aged 42 years, because of his opinions in favour of Napoleon Bonaparte. He then devoted himself to the study of insects. After twelve years of effort, Duponchel finished in 1838 ''L’Histoire naturelle des lépidoptères de France'', co-authored with Jean Baptiste Godart. This work consists of seventeen volumes (including twelve signed by Duponchel), 7600 coloured plates and 500 "boards" (which appear under the title ''Iconographie des Chenilles'' or ''Iconography of the Caterpillars''). Amphonyx Duponchel
''Amphonyx duponchel'', or Duponchel's sphinx, is a moth of the family Sphingidae. The species was first described by Felipe Poey in 1832. Distribution It is found in tropical and subtropical lowlands in Cuba and the West Indies and from Bolivia, southern Brazil and Argentina to Venezuela, Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Mexico. It is also found in Florida and Texas, where it is rare. Description The wingspan is 110–150 mm, with the males being much smaller than the females. There are black discal dashes and a transverse, kidney-shaped, dirty white discal spot located on the forewing upperside. Charles-Edmond Duponchel (architect)
Charles-Edmond Duponchel (7 April 1804 – 13 February 1864) was a French military officer accountant, in which capacity he served in Spain and Algeria. In addition, he studied architecture. He has frequently been confused by later writers with his contemporary Henri Duponchel, at one time director of the Paris Opera, who also studied architecture and has often erroneously been referred to under Charles-Edmond Duponchel's name. Biography Charles-Edmond Duponchel was one of two sons of Marie-Joseph-Désirée Ravet and entomologist Philogène-Auguste Duponchel. In 1823 he entered the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied with the architects Pierre-Théodore Bienaimé (1765–1826) and Léon Vaudoyer (1803–1872). He also joined the military in 1823 and served in the Spanish campaign that year.
