Dundas District
Dundas District Public School was a middle school, that was originally a high school, built in 1928 located in Dundas, now part of the City of Hamilton, Ontario. It was part of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. It is currently a condominium called District Lofts. Location Dundas District Public School is located on the former Highway 8, at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment that provided a scenic location and was also easily accessible for students in Dundas, and in the Flamborough area. The former Dundas District High School is a landmark in Dundas, located on the western edge of the town, just below the Niagara Escarpment. The property includes the remains of the original Fisher mill. Flamborough is a district and former municipality in the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. For most of its existence before amalgamation with Hamilton in 2001, Flamborough comprised the former townships of East Flamborough, West Flamborough, and Beverly, as well as the village of Waterdown. Ian Campbell Thomas (born 23 July 1950) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, actor and author. He is the younger brother of comedian and actor Dave Thomas. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Career Thomas is a successful rock and roll musician in Canada. His solo career peaked during the 1970s; his most memorable hit was 1973's "Painted Ladies". Success in the American market, however, has proven to be elusive with the possible exception of "Painted Ladies", which remains his only U.S. Top 40 hit. David William Thomas (born May 20, 1949) is a Canadian actor, comedian and television writer. He is best known for being one half of the duo Bob and Doug McKenzie with Rick Moranis. He appeared as Doug McKenzie on '' SCTV'', for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award out of two nominations, and in the film ''Strange Brew'' (1983), which he also co-directed. Parkside High School was located at 31 Parkside Avenue, Dundas, Ontario, and was a member of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB). The school opened in 1960 and backed onto the Dundas escarpment. Parkside High School had a 2009–2010 enrollment of 700, and reported that 80% of its graduates attend post-secondary education. The school's mission statement was "Educating students to become lifelong learners and contributing citizens in a challenging, changing, multi-cultural world." The school also offered special education classes and had an ESL program. In 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 Parkside High School was noted as the school with the most involved students in HWDSB according to Director Malloy's Annual Report. Highland Secondary School was a high school in Dundas, Ontario that opened in 1966. The school was a member of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, in Ward 13. Highland was originally conceived to be 25% Academic and 75% Vocational, but evolved into a fully comprehensive secondary school. Only 60% of Highland Secondary School students who graduated pursued post-secondary education, making Highland one of the lowest in the board. Highland Secondary was renamed Dundas Valley Secondary in June 2014, when nearby Parkside Secondary closed. ''Quercus muehlenbergii'', the chinquapin (or chinkapin) oak, is a deciduous species of tree in the white oak group (''Quercus'' sect. ''Quercus''). Niagara Escarpment
The Niagara Escarpment is a long escarpment, or cuesta, in Canada and the United States that runs predominantly east–west from New York through Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin, and into Illinois. The escarpment is most famous as the cliff over which the Niagara River plunges at Niagara Falls, for which it is named. The escarpment is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. The reserve has the oldest forest ecosystem and trees in eastern North America. The escarpment is not a fault line but the result of unequal erosion. It is composed of an outcrop belt of the Lockport Formation of Silurian age, and is similar to the Onondaga Formation, which runs in a parallel outcrop belt just to the south, through western New York and southern Ontario. Highway 8 (Ontario)
King's Highway 8, commonly referred to as Highway 8, is a provincially maintained highway in the Canadian province of Ontario. The route travels from Highway 21 in Goderich, on the shores of Lake Huron, to Highway 5 in the outskirts of Hamilton near Lake Ontario. Before the 1970s, it continued east through Hamilton and along the edge of the Niagara Escarpment to the American border at the Whirlpool Bridge in Niagara Falls. However, the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) replaced the role of Highway8 between those two cities, and the highway was subsequently transferred from the province to the newly formed Regional Municipality of Niagara in 1970.
