Duncorn Hill
Duncorn Hill is an English, landmark, rounded hill with a flat top close to the Fosse Way. It is located on a limestone plateau south of Bath, Somerset, Bath in Somerset and summits at above sea level. The hill's name derives from Celtic languages, Celtic ''din'' for fort and ''corn'' meaning Horn (anatomy), horn shaped. Geology The hill's bedrock is limestone of the Great Oolite Group with deposits of fuller's earth containing terebratulida, fossil shellfish. This is typically covered with a free draining soil layer of , mostly brown or greyish brown but with some yellow patches. History It has been speculated Duncorn Hill had been the site of a Bronze Age, Bronze or Iron Age hill fort. Field investigations were undertaken in 1966, but no evidence of a fort was found. The Escarpment, scarps previously thought to be part of a man-made structure were shown to be natural geological formations. Ralph Whitlock
Ralph Whitlock (1914–1995) was a Wiltshire farmer, broadcaster, conservationist, journalist and author of over 100 books. Background and education Whitlock was born in Pitton, near Salisbury, Wiltshire six months before the outbreak of the First World War. He was the son of a tenant farmer, the eldest of three children. His family name is noted on the first parish register in Pitton, where his family had been shepherds and farmers since the early 1600s. Whitlock was later to chronicle the history of his native village in ''The Lost Village'', which noted the changes in Pitton from the 1920s to the 1980s. Terebratulida
Terebratulids are one of only three living orders of articulate brachiopods, the others being the Rhynchonellida and the Thecideida. Craniida and Lingulida include living brachiopods, but are inarticulates. The name, Terebratula, may be derived from the Latin "terebra", meaning "hole-borer". Great Oolite Group
The Great Oolite Group is a Middle Jurassic stratigraphic unit that outcrops in southern England. It consists of a complex set of marine deposits primarily mudstone and bioclastic ooidal and fine grained limestone, deposited in nearshore to shelf settings. It is exposed at the surface as a variably thick belt extending roughly NE-SW from the coast of Dorset up to the Humber. It is also present at depth in the Weald and Wessex Basins, as well as offshore.
