Duncan McBryde
Duncan Elphinstone McBryde (12 May 1854 – 24 November 1920) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born in Argyllshire to Duncan and Alice McBryde, and migrated to New South Wales in 1872. He was a farmer, and on 2 August 1883 married Ellen Menzies, with whom he had two daughters. Around 1884 he relocated to Victoria, where he became a director of BHP in December 1885. He was chairman twice, from 1 February 1895 to 11 February 1897 and from 22 January 1915 to 9 March 1917, presiding over the official opening, in June 1915, of what was then Australia's largest steelworks at Newcastle, New South Wales. He also chaired the Silverton Tramway Company, the Broken Hill Proprietary Block 10 Co. Ltd, Broken Hill Associated Smelters, Zinc Producers' Association, the Commercial Bank of Australia and the National Trustees Executors & Agency Company. Argyllshire
Argyll (; archaically Argyle, in modern Gaelic, ), sometimes called Argyllshire, is a historic county and registration county of western Scotland. Argyll is of ancient origin, and corresponds to most of the part of the ancient kingdom of on Great Britain. Alfred Chandler (Australian Politician)
Alfred Elliott Chandler (1 July 1873 – 12 February 1935) was an Australian politician. Personal He was born in Malvern, Victoria to market gardener William Chandler and Kate Timewell. He attended state school and became a horticulturist, running a nursery in Boronia. On 24 May 1897, he married Elizabeth Ann Intermann, with whom he had one daughter. His wife died in 1899, following childbirth. Chandler remarried on 27 August 1901 to Marie Intermann, his first wife's sister. They had he had four sons and a daughter. Chandler died in Boronia in 1935. Political career He served on Ferntree Gully Shire Council from 1901 to 1935, with four terms as president (1908–09, 1918–19, 1923–24, 1934–35). William Adamson (Australian Politician)
William Addison Adamson (27 May 1858 – 10 June 1924) was an Australian politician. Adamson was born in South Yarra to seedsman William Adamson and Isabella Bruce. He attended Brighton Grammar School and became a grain merchant. On 9 June 1880 he married Lucy Jackson, with whom he had five children. From 1889 he worked as a stock and station agent, and he served on Brighton City Council from 1897 to 1913, with a term as mayor from 1901 to 1902. In 1910, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for South Eastern Province South Eastern Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council from November 1882. James Callender Campbell
James Callender Campbell (17 July 1838 – 9 February 1916) was an Australian politician, member of the Victorian Legislative Council for South Eastern Province from 1895 to 1910. Campbell was born in Ballynagard, Derry, Ireland and was educated at Foyle College and Belfast Academy. In 1858 he sailed for Australia in the ship ''Royal Charter''; his brothers having established a business – Campbell Brothers – some time before his arrival. Campbell entered into partnership with his brothers as merchants, importers and shipping agents until 1861 when he went to New Zealand and carried on the business of an importer and general merchant there till 1864 when he returned to Melbourne and in 1865 took the management of the auctioneering business of McCaw and another. In conjunction with William McCulloch he subsequently acquired the business, which for some years was carried on at the Royal Horse Bazaar under the style of McCulloch Campbell and Company. William Knox (Victorian Politician)
William Knox (25 April 1850 – 25 August 1913) was an Australian businessman and politician. Life and career Knox was born in Melbourne and his family later moved to Horsham and Ballarat. He was educated at Scotch College, Melbourne and joined the State Bank of Victoria in 1866 and worked in various country branches. In January 1884 he married Catherine Mary McMurtrie. In 1885, he became secretary of BHP and in 1888, his yearly salary was increased from £75 to £1,500. He effectively ran the complex organisation of a company that became Australia's biggest company and the world's biggest silver miner. He resigned as secretary in 1893 to become managing director of the Mount Lyell Mining & Railway Company, but was immediately appointed to BHP's board, a position he retained until 1910. Pharez Phillips (22 November 1855 – 9 August 1914) was an Australian politician. Biography Born in Mount Blackwood, he was educated at Grenville College in Ballarat before becoming a shopkeeper, farmer, and St Arnaud Town Councillor where he was three times president. James Bell (26 September 1836 – 24 February 1908) was an Australian politician, member of the Victorian Legislative Council from 1880 to May 1904. Early life Bell was born at Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, the son of James Bell, a store-keeper, and his wife Ann (''née'' Turnbull). Bell emigrated to Victoria in 1857, commenced business at Dunolly and was one of the first representatives of the district, mayor from 1862 to 1865. Political career In 1881 the Reform Act included Dunolly in the North West Province. He accepted office without portfolio in the Duncan Gillies-Alfred Deakin Government on 20 April 1886, and acted as Minister of Defence during Sir James Lorimer's absence in England, in 1887. He also assisted Mr. Dow in discharging the duties of Minister of Water Supply during Mr. Deakin's attendance at the Colonial Conference in London in that year.
