Dukat (currency)
The ducat () coin was used as a trade coin in Europe from the later Middle Ages from the 13th to 19th centuries. Its most familiar version, the gold ducat or sequin containing around of 98.6% fine gold, originated in Venice in 1284 and gained wide international acceptance over the centuries. Similarly named silver ducatons also existed. The gold ducat circulated along with the Florentine florin and preceded the modern British pound sterling and the United States dollar. Predecessors The word ''ducat'' is from Medieval Latin ''ducalis'' = "relating to a duke (or dukedom)", and initially meant "duke's coin" or a "duchy's coin". The first issue of scyphate billon coins modelled on Byzantine ''trachea'' was made by King Roger II of Sicily as part of the Assizes of Ariano (1140). It was to be a valid issue for the whole kingdom. Dukat (Star Trek)
Dukat is a fictional character from the television series '' Star Trek: Deep Space Nine''. A member of the fictional Cardassian species, he is introduced as the former overseer of the series' namesake space station but goes on to become the leader of his species' governing body, the Cardassian Union. At times an enemy while at others an ally of Benjamin Sisko, Dukat appears in 35 of the series' 176 episodes. He was portrayed by Marc Alaimo throughout. Dukat became a fan favorite among Star Trek fans and he is widely considered to be one of the most iconic villains in the ''Star Trek'' franchise. Creation and role The Cardassians were introduced to the ''Star Trek'' universe in the '' Next Generation'' episode " The Wounded". In that episode, Marc Alaimo played a Cardassian named Macet. Sandra "Sandy" Dukat (born May 3, 1972) is an American Paralympic athlete. Born with proximal femoral focal deficiency, she had her right leg amputated above the knee at the age of four. She has competed internationally in alpine skiing, swimming and triathlon. , she holds the marathon world record for above-knee amputee women. Sporting career Dukat grew up competing in able-bodied sports. She played basketball, high-jumped and was on her high school swim team. When she called the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) looking for an amputee support group, she found out about their sports teams. It was only then that she learned that Paralympic sport existed. Swimming In 1996, Dukat joined the swim team at the RIC. In 1997, she won 2 silver and 1 bronze medals at the USA National Championships, and won her classification at the National 5K Disabled Open Water Invitational. Dukat is a Croatian company that produces dairy products based in Zagreb. History It was founded in 1912 as ''Gradska mljekara'' (eng. city dairy company) in today's Radić street in Zagreb, in what was then Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia within Austria-Hungary. This was followed by the founding of other dairy companies in the city, Baltic (1924) and Samopomoć (1926), all of which were eventually merged into a single company called 'Gradska Mljekara Zagreb' (1948). It was finally renamed to Dukat in 1972. It produces a variety of products ranging from milk, yoghurt to pudding, cream, mousse, butter, spreads and dip, including low-calorie and lactose free variants. Dukat is a community in Vlorë County, southern Albania. At the 2015 local government reform it became part of the municipality Vlorë. The Dukat Plain covers an area of around 1,000–1,500 ha delimited by the Ceraunian Mountains and opened in the north towards the Bay of Vlorë on the Adriatic. Dukat traditionally belongs to the Albanian ethnographic region of Labëria. Name Its name contains the Albanian suffix ''-at'', widely used to form toponyms from personal names and surnames. Dukat (russian: Дукат) is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) in the Omsukchansky District of Magadan Oblast, Russia, located north of Magadan. Population: History In the mid of the 1960s, geologists from Omsukchan discovered a rich ore deposit of silver; and named the settlement of Dukat, founded in 1968, after the ducat, an old trade coin used in Europe. The status of urban-type settlement was assigned by the decision of the Magadan Regional Executive Committee of February 19, 1976.
