Charlotte Dubray
Charlotte Besnard (25 April 1854 – 15 March 1931), born Charlotte Dubray, was a French sculptor. She is perhaps best known as the wife of the successful painter Paul-Albert Besnard (1849–1934), whose career she did much to advance. Although she was well known for her own work in her day, she has since been largely forgotten. Life Charlotte-Gabrielle Dubray was born in Paris on 25 April 1854. Her parents were Vital Gabriel Dubray (1818–1892), a sculptor, and Jeanne Aglaë Cecconi (1820–1896). Her father had a successful career under the Second French Empire (1851–70), executed many commissions and became a member of the Legion of Honour. Vital Dubray taught sculpture to two of his daughters, Charlotte and Giovanna. At this time sculpture was considered a less noble art than painting, a rough and dirty trade akin to artisan stonecutting, that generally required a public or private sponsor to cover the cost. Juanita Suazo Dubray
Juanita Suazo Dubray (born 1930) also known as Juanita DuBray, is a Native American potter from Taos Pueblo, New Mexico. She is a lifelong resident of Taos Pueblo and descends from an unbroken line of Taos Pueblo natives. Her mother Tonita made traditional micaceous pottery for utilitarian use. She became interested in the micaceous pottery tradition in 1980 after a career of working as a pharmaceutical technician. She started making micaceous pottery at the age of 50 with the encouragement of a neighbor who gave her some clay. When she first started making pottery she made one-of-a-kind micaceous pots using different ancient designs and symbols. Eventually she began using more contemporary designs and symbols on her pots, making them out of both micaceous and white clay. She added an element of sculpture, producing many pieces with icons of corn, turtles, lizards, and kiva steps in relief. Her original corn design has become her most recognized symbol. Lionel Dubray
Lionel Dubray (Lionel Henri Gontran Dubray, (31 December 1923–22 July 1944) was a member of the French Resistance during World War II. Biography Dubray was born on 31 December 1923 in Joinville-le-Pont, a commune in the southeastern suburbs of Paris, France. He was the son of Émile Dubray and Marcelle Pique. Dubray joined the Resistance in December 1942, enlisting in the Alsace Lorraine des Francs-Tireurs et Partisans (FTP). He participated in numerous attacks against the Germans in and around occupied Paris, most notably in October 1943 against a company of German soldiers during a parade. Later identified by the Gestapo and surrounded, he escaped and fled to Brittany, where he joined the 1st battalion of the French Forces of the Interior (FFI) in Morbihan. Dubray was taken prisoner on 14 July 1944 in Pluméliau and tortured for eight days. With thirteen others, he was executed on 22 July 1944 in Colpo and buried in a common grave.
