In Greek mythology, Dryope (; Ancient Greek: Δρυόπη derived from δρῦς ''drys'', "oak"; ''dryope'' "woodpecker") is the name attributed to several distinct figures: *Dryope, daughter of Dryops and mother of Amphissus by Apollo. * Dryope, mother of Tarquitus by Faunus, the god of the woods. Tarquitus was slain by Aeneas. * Dryope, a nymph responsible for kidnapping Hylas, which she did in accord with Hera's will. Dryope (daughter Of Dryops)
In Greek mythology, Dryope (; grc-gre, Δρυόπη derived from δρῦς ''drys'', "oak"; ''dryope'' "woodpecker") is the daughter of Dryops, king of Oeta ("oak-man") or of Eurytus (and hence half-sister to Iole). She is sometimes thought of as one of the Pleiades (and hence a nymph). Dryopes

According to Herodotus, their earliest abode is said to have been on Mount Oeta and its adjacent valleys, in the district called after them, Dryopis (Δρυοπίς). The Dorians settled in that part of their country which lay between Oeta and Parnassus, and which was afterwards called Doris; but Dryopis originally extended as far north as the river Spercheius. The name of Dryopis was still applied to the latter district in the time of Strabo, who calls it a tetrapolis, like Doris. Heracles, in conjunction with the Malians, is said to have driven the Dryopes out of their country, and to have given it to the Dorians; whereupon the expelled Dryopes settled at Hermione and Asine in the Argolic peninsula, at Styrus and Carystus in Euboea, and in the islands of Cythnus and Cyprus. Amphissus
In Greek mythology, Amphissus (Ancient Greek: Ἄμφίσσος) was the son of Apollo and Dryope. In Ovid's accounts, he is mentioned to be the son of Andraemon and Dryope. Amphissus eventually built a temple to his father in the city he founded, Amfissa, Amphissa. Mythology Apollo found Dryope tending her sheep on a mountainside while she was being accompanied by other dryads. The god hid behind a tree and watched her, and later on, he disguised himself as a turtle in order for him to get closer to her. Dryope claimed the turtle as hers. Then, to scare away the other dryads, Apollo turned into a snake to chased them away and coupled with Dryope. Dryops (Oeta)
In Greek mythology, Dryops (, Ancient Greek: Δρύοψ means 'oak-face', 'wood-face' or 'wood-eater') was the king of the Dryopians. Family Dryops was the son of the river god Spercheus and the Danaid Polydora,Antoninus Liberalis32as cited in Nicander's ''Metamorphoses'' or of Apollo by Dia, daughter of King Lycaon of Arcadia. As a newborn infant, he was concealed by Dia in a hollow oak-tree. He had one daughter, Dryope, and also a son Cragaleus. Reign Dryops had been king of the Dryopes, who derived their name from him. The Asinaeans in Messenia worshipped him as their ancestral hero, and as a son of Apollo, and celebrated a festival in honour of him every other year. Theiodamas
In Greek mythology, the name Theiodamas or Thiodamas () may refer to: *Theiodamas, king of the Dryopes, father of Hylas by the nymph Menodice, daughter of Orion. The '' Bibliotheca'' and Apollonius Rhodius relate of him that one day when he was working the land with a plough pulled by two bulls, he encountered Heracles. The latter, being short of food at the moment, slaughtered one of Theiodamas' bulls and consumed it. Theiodamas attempted to start a fight over the bull and was killed by Heracles. Apollonius Rhodius suggests that the incident was simply a pretext for Heracles to start a war against the unjust Dryopes; according to Apollodorus, Heracles did conquer the people in alliance with Ceyx of Trachis. The ''Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology'' (1849, originally published 1844 under a slightly different title) is an encyclopedia/biographical dictionary. Edited by William Smith, the dictionary spans three volumes and 3,700 pages. It is a classic work of 19th-century lexicography. The work is a companion to Smith's ''Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities'' and '' Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography''. Authors and scope The work lists thirty-five authors in addition to the editor, who was also the author of the unsigned articles. The other authors were classical scholars, primarily from Oxford, Cambridge, Rugby School, and the University of Bonn, but some were from other institutions. William Smith (lexicographer)
Sir William Smith (20 May 1813 – 7 October 1893) was an English lexicographer. He became known for his advances in the teaching of Greek and Latin in schools. Early life Smith was born in Enfield in 1813 to Nonconformist parents. He attended the Madras House school of John Allen in Hackney. Originally destined for a theological career, he instead became articled to a solicitor. Meanwhile, he taught himself classics in his spare time, and when he entered University College London carried off both the Greek and Latin prizes. He was entered at Gray's Inn in 1830, but gave up his legal studies for a post at University College School and began to write on classical subjects.
