Dry Creek (South Australia)
Dry Creek or Dry Creek Drain is a seasonal stream in South AustraliaWhitworth (1866) p. 69 which passes through the Adelaide suburbs of Modbury, Walkley Heights and Pooraka. The nearby suburb of Dry Creek and Dry Creek railway station are named after the stream. Description In season Dry Creek flows from its source near Yatala Vale in the Mount Lofty Ranges to the Barker Inlet of the Gulf St Vincent via a manufactured drain near Globe Derby Park. The flooded state of the plain either side of Dry Creek after heavy rain is presumed to be the source of the local place name 'Yatala' (as in Hundred of Yatala and Yatala Vale). The name is likely derived from the indigenous word 'yertalla', which means "water running by the side of a river". Gulf St Vincent
Gulf St Vincent, sometimes referred to as St Vincent Gulf, St Vincent's Gulf or Gulf of St Vincent, is the eastern of two large inlets of water on the southern coast of Australia, in the state of South Australia, the other being the larger Spencer Gulf, from which it is separated by Yorke Peninsula. On its eastern side the gulf is bordered by the Adelaide Plains and the Fleurieu Peninsula. Stockade Botanical Park
Stockade Botanic Park (commonly known also as ''Stockade Park'' and ''Stockade Botanical Park'') is a public reserve off Hoods Road in the City of Port Adelaide Enfield's suburb of Northfield. It was formerly associated with a prison quarry but has now been redesigned with water features, an amphitheatre, and picnic areas. History The area originally was the end of the Northfield railway line, first opened in 1857 to service the colony's prisoner camp, then known as The Stockade, and especially to convey bluestone quarried from the banks of Dry Creek. In 1878, the quarry supplied 25,000 tonnes of stone to construction projects in the developing city of Adelaide. Trains last ran to The Stockade in 1961 and the track was removed in 1973. Stockade Railway Station
The Stockade railway station, the terminal station of the then Stockade railway line (later the Northfield railway line), was opened on 1 June 1857. It was built to service the colony's prisoner camp, and to transport bluestone mined by convicts to building projects in downtown Adelaide. After a century of service, it was closed in 1961, and the quarry area was later redeveloped as a park. Development The station and single line were opened in 1857 to carry prisoner-mined stone from the quarries behind Yatala Labour Prison (itself originally known as "The Stockade"). It was also used to transfer prisoners and supplies to the prison, which was first opened in 1854. The station was built as the terminus of a branch of what is now the Gawler railway line, making it one of South Australia's oldest rail lines. Yatala Labour Prison
Yatala Labour Prison is a high-security men's prison located in the north-eastern part of the northern Adelaide suburb Northfield, South Australia. It was built in 1854 to enable prisoners to work at Dry Creek, quarrying rock for roads and construction. Originally known as The Stockade of Dry Creek or just The Stockade, it acquired its current name from a local Kaurna word relating to inundation by water, which was used for the Hundred of Yatala. The prison has been expanded many times but still has functioning buildings that date to the 1850s. It remains Adelaide's main male prison and although it was scheduled to be closed by 2011, it has remained open due to the Global Financial Crisis leading to a lack of funding for a replacement prison. A gully is a landform created by running water, mass movement, or commonly a combination of both eroding sharply into soil or other relatively erodible material, typically on a hillside or in river floodplains or terraces. Hundred Of Yatala
The Hundred of Yatala is a cadastral unit of hundred in South Australia covering much of the Adelaide metropolitan area north of the River Torrens. It is one of the eleven hundreds of the County of Adelaide stretching from the Torrens in the south to the Little Para River in the north; and spanning from the coast in the west to the Adelaide foothills in the east. Globe Derby Park is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the City of Salisbury. Demographics The 2006 Census by the Australian Bureau of Statistics counted 314 persons in Globe Derby Park on census night. Of these, 49.0% were male and 51.0% were female. The majority of residents (87.3%) are of Australian birth, with another common census response being England (5.4%). The age distribution of Globe Derby Park residents is skewed towards an older population compared to the greater Australian population. 79.6% of residents were over 25 years in 2006, compared to the Australian average of 66.5%; and 20.4% were younger than 25 years, compared to the Australian average of 33.5%.
