Drunter Und Drüber
(, "under and over", " haywire") is a multiplayer board game invented by Klaus Teuber, first published in 1991 in Germany by Hans im Glück. A second edition was released in 1994 by Hans im Glück and featured art by Franz Vohwinkel. The game was repackaged and rethemed as the western game ''Wacky Wacky West'' in 2010. Gameplay Players take on the role of the people of Schilda and work to build a new town after they burned down their old one. Buildings are already completed and each player is secretly assigned one of six types of buildings, that each appear five times on the board. Buildings closer to the center of the board have a higher point value. Each player is given an identical set of vote cards that are worth varying degrees of yes or no. Every turn, players lay down tiles of streets, rivers, and town walls which add on to existing pieces. The ''Schildbürger'' ("citizens of Schilda") are a topic in German chapbook tradition corresponding to the Wise Men of Gotham in English-language tradition. Background The "people of Schilda", of a German town of "Schilda" (fictitious – not the actual town of Schilda), figure in short tales, known as ''Schildbürgerstreiche'' ("pranks of the citizens of Schilda"). Alongside Till Eulenspiegel, the ''Schildbürger'' chapbooks are the best-known collection of the prankster type in German literary tradition. The oldest known edition was printed in Strasbourg in 1597 under the title of ''Lalenbuch''. Here, the town was known as ''Lalenburg'' and its inhabitants ''Lalen''. The second edition, printed in 1598, changed this to ''Die Schiltbürger''. The author of the original collection is unknown. Internationale Spieltage SPIEL, often called the Essen Game Fair after the city where it is held, is an annual four-day boardgame trade fair which is also open to the public held in October (Thursday to the following Sunday) at the Messe Essen exhibition centre in Essen, Germany. It began in 1983. With 1 021 exhibitors from 50 nations in 2016, SPIEL is the biggest fair for board games in the world. Many new games are released at the fair each year, especially (but not exclusively) European-style board games. At SPIEL board games are offered which are hard to find in retail because a lot of international and small exhibitors present their products. It was started in 1990 by the German magazine ''Die Pöppel-Revue'', which collects votes from the industry's stores, magazines, professionals and game clubs. The results are announced every October at the '' Spiel'' game fair in Essen, Germany. The Essen Feather is awarded at the same ceremony. In contrast to the Spiel des Jahres, which tends to be awarded to family games, the DSP is awarded for "gamers' games" with particularly good or innovative gameplay. The Spiel des Jahres (, ''Game of the Year'') is an award for board and card games, created in 1978 with the purpose of rewarding family-friendly game design, and promoting excellent games in the German market. It is thought that the existence and popularity of the award was one of the major drivers of the quality of games coming out of Germany, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s. A ''Spiel des Jahres'' nomination can increase the typical sales of a game from 500–3,000 copies to around 10,000, and the winner can usually expect to sell as many as 500,000 copies. Klaus Teuber (born June 25, 1952) is a German former dental technician and designer of board games. He is best known for designing the strategy board game Catan. Career Teuber won the Spiel des Jahres ("Game of the Year") award four times: for ''The Settlers of Catan'', ''Barbarossa'', '' Drunter und Drüber'' and '' Adel Verpflichtet''. '' By Hook or Crook'' by Teuber was published in the American market by Avalon Hill in 1991, making it an early German style board game import. Personal life Teuber retired from his profession as a dental technician to become a full-time game designer in 1999. , he lives in Roßdorf with his wife Claudia. They have two sons, Guido and Benny.
