Dragon Head (Arizona)
Dragon Head (Arizona) is a elevation summit located in the Grand Canyon, in Coconino County, Arizona, Coconino County of Arizona, Southwestern United States, US. It is situated in the north of the Hindu Amphitheater, ~2.0 miles west of Shiva Temple (Grand Canyon), Shiva Temple, and ~2.5 mi southeast of Grama Point (northeast of Point Sublime). Unlike the extensive Ponderosa Pine forest of Shiva Temple, tableland/plateau prominence, Dragon Head’s flat-topped (minor plateau), is only populated with a marginal non-Ponderosa forest. The Dragon (Arizona)
The Dragon is a 8,105-foot-elevation summit located in the Grand Canyon, in Coconino County of Arizona, US. It is situated north of the Hindu Amphitheater, and about ~4.5 miles north-northwest of Shiva Temple, and ~2.5 mi north of Dragon Head. Coconino Sandstone
Coconino Sandstone is a geologic formation named after its exposure in Coconino County, Arizona. This formation spreads across the Colorado Plateau province of the United States, including northern Arizona, northwest Colorado, Nevada, and Utah. This rock formation is particularly prominent in the Grand Canyon, where it is visible as a prominent white cliff-forming layer. The thickness of the formation varies due to regional structural features; in the Grand Canyon area it is only thick in the west, thickens to over in the middle and then thins to in the east. Either the Kaibab Limestone or Toroweap Formation overlies the Coconino Sandstone. The Coconino Sandstone is typically buff to white in color. Hermit Shale
The Permian Hermit Formation, also known as the Hermit Shale, is a nonresistant unit that is composed of slope-forming reddish brown siltstone, mudstone, and very fine-grained sandstone. Within the Grand Canyon region, the upper part of the Hermit Formation contains red and white, massive, calcareous sandstone and siltstone beds that exhibit low-angle cross-bedding. Beds of dark red crumbly siltstone fill shallow paleochannels that are quite common in this formation. The siltstone beds often contain poorly preserved plant fossils. The Hermit Formation varies in thickness from about in the eastern part of the Grand Canyon region to about in the region of Toroweap and Shivwits Plateaus. It is situated six miles north of Hopi Point overlook of the canyon's South Rim, about 2.5 miles southwest of North Rim's Tiyo Point, and two miles northwest of Isis Temple, where it towers above the Colorado River. Bright Angel Shale
The Cambrian Bright Angel Shale is the middle layer of the three member Tonto Group geologic feature. The 3-rock Tonto section famously sits upon the Great Unconformity because of the highly resistant cliffs of the base layer, vertical Tapeats Sandstone cliffs. The Bright Angel Shale is easily identified for two reasons. Its soft-greenish color stands out against the browns, reds, and whites of neighboring rock units. And secondly for its slope-forming character against mostly cliff-forming resistant rocks. The Bright Angel Shale is about thick at its maximum. It is a nonresistant slope-forming unit. Muav Limestone
The Cambrian Muav Limestone is a geologic unit within the 5-member Tonto Group. It is about thick at its maximum. It is a resistant cliff-forming unit. The Tonto Group is a name for an assemblage of related sedimentary strata, collectively known by geologists as a ''Group'', that comprises the basal sequence Paleozoic strata exposed in the sides of the Grand Canyon.
