Dr McKenna Cup
The Dr McKenna Cup is an annual Gaelic football competition played between counties and universities in the province of Ulster. It is the secondary Gaelic football competition based in Ulster behind the Ulster Senior Football Championship, and the fourth most important inter-county competition in which Ulster counties take part, behind the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Ulster Championship and the National Football League. Once held in high regard, in recent years the focus of the competition has changed, and some county teams have made use of it as a pre-season "warm up" competition ahead of the National League and Championship. The 2024 Dr McKenna Cup, known for sponsorship reasons as the Bank of Ireland Dr McKenna Cup, is a Gaelic football competition in the province of Ulster for county teams. It took place in January 2024. were the winners, beating in the final. Competition format Group stage The nine teams are drawn into three sections of three teams. Each team plays the other teams in their section once, either home or away. Two points are awarded for a win and one for a draw. The tie-break for teams level on points is points difference. Knockout stage The winners of the three sections and the best of the runners-up in the three sections compete in the semi-finals with the two winners meeting in the final. Drawn games go to penalty shootouts without extra time being played. The 2013 Dr McKenna Cup was a Gaelic football competition played under the auspices of Ulster GAA. The tournament features the 2012 All-Ireland Champions, Donegal, whose first game (away against Fermanagh) was put back for several days due to Donegal's team holiday in Dubai. Ahead of the tournament Queen's announced they were quitting in a controversy over their players being poached by other teams, though Ulster Council President Aogan Farrell had appealed for this practice to stop. Donegal GAA
The Donegal County Board ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Dhún na nGall) or Donegal GAA is one of 32 county boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in Ireland, and is responsible for the administration of Gaelic games in County Donegal. The County Board is responsible for preparing the Donegal county teams in the various Gaelic sporting codes; football, hurling, camogie and handball. The county football team was the third from the province of Ulster to win an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC), following Cavan and Down. Mickey Harte
Mickey Harte (born 1952) is an Irish Gaelic football Manager (Gaelic games), manager and former player. He has been manager of the Louth county football team, Louth county team since 2020. Harte managed the Tyrone county football team, Tyrone county team from 2002 until his resignation in 2020, at which time he was the longest-serving manager then active with the same team in inter-county competition. 2007 Dr McKenna Cup
The 2007 Dr McKenna Cup was a Gaelic football competition played under the auspices of Ulster GAA. Summary Tyrone were eventually declared the winning team at official level, though the victory was tarnished by their choice of tactics. The team was at one point stripped of the cup for breaking the rules. They defeated Donegal in the final; however they did so in controversial circumstances while fielding ineligible players and midfielder Kevin Hughes was shown a red card. A month-long dispute over the player eligibility issue ensued, with the matter coming before the Ulster Council. Tyrone were allowed to keep the cup, even though they had earlier been deducted points for exactly the same offence, though not enough to prevent them from winning their group and eliminate them from the competition. 2009 Dr McKenna Cup
The 2009 Dr McKenna Cup was a Gaelic football competition played under the auspices of Ulster GAA. The tournament was won by Donegal, their first McKenna title since 1991. They defeated Queen's in the final, after extra-time, with goals from David Walsh and Ryan Bradley. Donegal were captained by Rory Kavanagh. Queen's had earlier knocked out title holders Down with a six-point win. They were also the first university side to reach the final. Format A group-based format was used, with the twelve teams divided into three groups of four. Each group included a University team, and three inter-county teams. The Sigerson Cup is the trophy for the premier Gaelic football championship among Higher Education institutions (Universities, Colleges and Institutes of Technology) in Ireland. It traditionally begins in mid January and ends in late February. St Mary's University College is a university college in Belfast, Northern Ireland. History The origins of the College can be traced back to 1900 when the Dominican Sisters opened St Mary’s Training College on the present Falls Road campus with an enrollment of 100 women students.
