Edith Downing
Edith Elizabeth Downing (January 1857 – 3 October 1931) was a British artist, sculptor and suffragette. Life Edith Elizabeth Downing was born in Cardiff in January 1857. She was one of four children of the coal merchant and shipping agent Edward Downing, having two sisters and a brother, Edward. Her sister Mary was also to become an artist, whilst sister Caroline Lowder Downing was to join the Women's Social and Political Union with Edith. After attending Cheltenham College, Edith spent most of her working life based in Chelsea, London, Chelsea. She died in October 1931 in Surrey. Career Edith Downing began her artistic training at the South Kensington School of Art, later attending the Slade School of Fine Art, Slade School of Art between 1892-1893. Ken Downing
Kenneth Henry Downing (5 December 1917 – 3 May 2004) was an English racing driver. From a wealthy family, he began racing in the late 1940s, competing in his first event the Eastbourne Rally in a Healey. Initially racing a Brooke Special, he switched to a Connaught in 1951, winning 17 races throughout the year. Downing switched to single seaters in 1952, racing a Connaught A-Type, and won the Madgwick Cup at Goodwood and second place at the Grand Prix des Frontières at Chimay, where he lost the lead at the end of the race several metres before the finish line. He finished ninth in the at Silverstone, but had run fourth in the race before spinning while avoiding a backmarker. He competed in the later that year, but retired from an oil-pressure problem. He switched to an Aston Martin DB3 for 1953, but decided to retire from racing soon after. Downing emigrated to South Africa in 1955, and later lived in Monaco where he died in 2004. Keith Downing
Keith Gordon Downing (born 23 July 1965) is an English former footballer and football manager. He made the vast majority of his appearances for Wolverhampton Wanderers. A former Chelsea youth team player, he moved from Mile Oak Rovers into the English Football League with Notts County in 1984. Three years later he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers. He spent six years with Wolves, winning the Football League Trophy in 1988 and successive Fourth Division and Third Division titles in 1987–88 and 1988–89. He joined Birmingham City in 1993, before moving on to Stoke City the following year. In 1995, he joined Hereford United via Cardiff City, and retired in 1999. James Downing (1946 - 28 April 2012) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played as a midfielder for the Cork senior team. Born in Urhan, County Cork, Downing first played competitive football in his youth. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Cork minor team, before later joining the under-21 and junior sides. He made his senior debut during the 1967 championship. Downing was a regular member of the panel for several years and won one Munster medal as a non-playing substitute. James Downing (born January 4, 1942) is an American former professional race car driver, he is a five-time IMSA Championship winner, owner/driver of Downing/Atlanta Racing, and was principal in the development of the HANS device. Greg "GD" Downing (born March 24, 1985, in Auburn, New York) is a professional lacrosse player with the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse and with the Toronto Rock of the National Lacrosse League. He was selected to participate in the 2008 and 2009 MLL All-Star Games. College Downing attended Fairfield University, where he was a three-time All-American. George Downing (surfer)
George Downing (May 2, 1930 – March 5, 2018) was an American surfer based in Hawaii. In 1951, he created the first surfboard with a removable fin. Early life Downing, of Irish-American background, was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii Territory, where he learned to surf at the age of nine. He took a route as a paper boy and bought his first surfboard from a homeowner along his route. By 1942, his uncle Wally Froiseth took him around the islands to surf. Career Downing noticed that surfers were becoming reckless and getting injured after trying to surf 25-foot waves. Consequently, Downing built "The Rocket", a surfboard with a removable fin, and thus revolutionized the surfboard and surfing.
