Speaker Of The House Of Keys
The Speaker of the House of Keys () is the principal officer of the House of Keys, the lower house of the Isle of Man legislature. The Speaker is elected from the membership of the House at its first sitting after an election. He is responsible for controlling the procedure of the House and for the authoritative interpretation of its standing orders. He sets the business of the House and authorises the order of business of the House for each sitting. The Speaker uses the letters SHK after his name. The Speaker is not entitled to speak in debates in the House, but is entitled to vote. If a vote is tied, convention dictates that he votes to continue debate or retain the status quo. Geoff Corkish
Charles Geoffrey "Geoff" Corkish MBE MLC (born 25 May 1953) is a Manx politician, who is currently a Member of the House of Keys for Douglas West. He was elected at the 2006 General Election, topping the polls beating Home Affairs Minister and Chief Minister candidate John Shimmin and former MHK Geoff Cannell. Mr Corkish has stated his opposition to social media and a belief that forums that do not support the Manx Government should be banned. Early life Born on 25 May 1953 to William Douglas Corkish and Margaret Elizabeth Corkish (née Cringle), he was educated at Pulrose Infants School, Demesne Road School and Douglas High School for Boys. He later went on to work for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company from 1969 to 2006, rising to be Communications Director. The Legislative Council ( gv, Yn Choonceil Slattyssagh) is the upper chamber of Tynwald, the legislature of the Isle of Man. The abbreviation "LegCo" is often used. Dominic Delaney
Dominic Francis Kevin Delaney is a former member of the House of Keys and the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man, where he sat as a member of the Alliance for Progressive Government. He was once called "one of the Island's most outspoken politicians". Personal life Delaney was born in Douglas in 1943 and attended St Mary's School. John Shimmin
John Shimmin (born 1 July 1960) is a former Member of the House of Keys for Douglas West. Early life Shimmin was born in Douglas in 1960 and educated at St Ninian's High School and the Worcester College of Higher Education. He was then a teacher (Physical Education, Mathematics, General Studies) from 1982 in several areas of the UK - Crewe, Tamworth, Knowsley before returning to teach in Douglas (St Ninian’s High School) where he was also Head of Year from 1989-96 until entering politics. Political career Shimmin was elected as MHK for Douglas West in 1996 at his first attempt. He became Chairman of the Isle of Man Post Office in 1999 before becoming Minister of Transport in 2002. Alexander Frank Downie, OBE, MLC (born 1945, Douglas) is a Manx politician and former marine engineer. He is a member of the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man and a former Trade and Industry Minister of the Government. He was a Member of the House of Keys from 1991 until his election to the Legislative Council in 2005. Clifford Irving (politician)
Clifford Irving (24 May 1914 – 13 July 2004) was an Isle of Man politician who, in a four-decade career lasting from 1955 to 1995, fulfilled a number of legislative and administrative duties, including those of Chairman of the Executive Council and Member of the Legislative Council. Irving first stood for election to the House of Keys in 1955 and represented the constituencies of Douglas North and Douglas East from 1955 to 1962 and 1966 to 1981, rising, in 1977, to become Chairman of the Executive Council, the forerunner to the Chief Minister of the Isle of Man, a position he held until the end of his term of service in 1981.
