Doug Jennings (Australian Politician)
Douglas Bernard Jennings (30 October 1929 – 9 April 1987) was an Australian politician and businessman. Born in Melbourne to Albert Victor Jennings, founder of the property development company A.V. Jennings, he left Melbourne Grammar School to join his father's firm in 1947, and worked in several areas of the organisation. In the late 1950s he became mostly involved in the Housing Division in Melbourne, but also encouraged the company to branch out into real estate and furnishings. When Jennings ran into hard times in the early 1960s, Doug Jennings came in for criticism and left the company. After time spent in Queensland as the owner operator of the Mount Surprise Cattle station, he returned to Victoria and established a Brahman stud at Moorooduc. While there, he was elected as the Liberal Party member for the state seat of Westernport. John Jennings (Australian Politician)
John Thomas Jennings, (19 December 1878 – 20 December 1968) was an Australian politician. Born in Melbourne, he attended state schools before becoming a retailer of dental supplies. He underwent military service from 1899 to 1901 and served in South Africa during the Second Boer War with the Victorian Mounted Rifles. In 1931, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the United Australia Party member for South Sydney in New South Wales. South Sydney was abolished in 1934 and replaced with Watson; Jennings contested Watson and won. The Division of Watson is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. Watson is an urban electorate and extends from the Hume Highway, Canterbury Road and the M5 as far west as Stacey Street and Joseph Street in Sydney. It has a large immigrant population, with significant Chinese, Bangladeshi, and Lebanese communities. History The division was created at the redistribution of 31 January 1992, to replace the abolished Division of St George and is named after the Right Honourable Chris Watson, the first Labor Prime Minister of Australia. It was first contested at the 1993 federal election. United Australia Party
The United Australia Party (UAP) was an Australian political party that was founded in 1931 and dissolved in 1945. The party won four federal elections in that time, usually governing in coalition with the Country Party. It provided two prime ministers: Joseph Lyons ( 1932–1939) and Robert Menzies ( 1939–1941). The UAP was created in the aftermath of the 1931 split in the Australian Labor Party. Six fiscally conservative Labor MPs left the party to protest the Scullin Government's financial policies during the Great Depression. Led by Joseph Lyons, a former Premier of Tasmania, the defectors initially sat as independents, but then agreed to merge with the Nationalist Party and form a united opposition. Parliament House in Brisbane is the meeting place of the Parliament of Queensland, housing its only chamber, the Legislative Assembly. It is located on the corner of George Street and Alice Street at Gardens Point in the CBD, and is next to the Queensland University of Technology and City Botanic Gardens. History Planning The Parliament of Queensland first met on 22 May 1860 in the former convict barracks on Queen Street. The building was not considered a suitable meeting place for Parliament in the long-term, but the government was preoccupied with the construction of Government House, and plans for a new legislative facility were not made until after its completion. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the Monarch of Australia and the Legislative Assembly.
