Doubledogdare
Doubledogdare (1953–1974) was an American Thoroughbred Champion racehorse. Bred and raced by the renowned Claiborne Farm of Bull Hancock, she was sired by Double Jay, the American Champion Two-Year-Old Colt of 1946 and a four-time Leading broodmare sire in North America. Her dam was Flaming Top, a daughter of 1935 U.S. Triple Crown champion Omaha. Conditioned for racing by Moody Jolley, at age two Doubledogdare earned important wins including the 1955 Matron Stakes under future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Eric Guerin and the 1955 National Stallion Stakes, Fillies Division when ridden by another future Hall of Fame jockey, Jack Westrope. Doubledogdare's 1955 performances saw her win six of ten starts and finish second twice, earning $127,689. Doubledogdare Stakes
The Doubledogdare Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares that are four years old or older, over a distance of a mile and a sixteenth on the dirt held annually in April at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky. The event currently carries a purse of $300,000. History The race was named for Doubledogdare, the filly who gave Claiborne Farm their first major stakes win at Keeneland in the 1955 Alcibiades Stakes. Doubledogdare went on to be voted that year's American Co-Champion Two-Year-Old Filly and returned to Keeneland in 1956 to win the Spinster Stakes and would earn American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly honors. Eight Belles Stakes
The Eight Belles Stakes is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old filly sprinters run at a distance of 7 furlongs at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky each year on Kentucky Oaks Day. History The inaugural running of the event was on the opening day of the 1956 Spring meeting at Churchill Downs on Saturday, 27 April 1956 as the seventh and main feature race on the nine race program named the Oaks Prep over a distance of six furlongs. The event attracted the 1955 US Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Doubledogdare and Calumet Farm's fine filly Princess Turia. The event was scheduled as a preparatory event for the much longer Kentucky Oaks which was scheduled on the following Friday. Doubledogdare started as the 2/5 odds-on favorite and held off Princess Turia to win by half a length in a time of 1:11. Keeneland Association, Inc. is an equine business based in Lexington, Kentucky. The American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly is an American Thoroughbred horse racing honor awarded annually to a female horse in Thoroughbred flat racing. It became part of the Eclipse Awards program in 1971. The award originated in 1936 when both the ''Daily Racing Form'' (DRF) and Turf and Sports Digest (TSD) magazine began naming an annual champion. Starting in 1950, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations (TRA) began naming its own champion. The following list provides the name of the horses chosen by these organizations. There were several disagreements, with more than one champion being recognized on five occasions. Ashland Stakes
The Ashland Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in early April at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, United States. It and the Ashland Oaks, the Kentucky Association racetrack's predecessor race, were named for Ashland, the homestead and breeding farm of statesman Henry Clay in Lexington, Kentucky. Restricted to three-year-olds fillies the race is currently run at a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles. The race is a Grade I event with a current purse of $500,000 and has been a prep race to the Triple Tiara of Thoroughbred Racing, including the Kentucky Oaks, the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes and Mother Goose Stakes. The Spinster Stakes (also known as the "Juddmonte Spinster" with Juddmonte Farms sponsorship) is an American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares aged three or up run annually in early October at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Kentucky. It is set at a distance of one and one-eighth miles and is a Grade I event with a current purse of $600,000. The Spinster, sponsored by Prince Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms beginning in 2005, is a major prep for the Breeders' Cup Distaff and one of the most important weight-for-age stakes races exclusively for fillies and mares. Now part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series, the winner of the Spinster Stakes automatically qualifies for the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Falls City Handicap
The Falls City Handicap is a Thoroughbred horse race run annually near the end of November at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. A Grade II event, the race is open to fillies and mares, age three and up, willing to race one and one-eighth miles on the dirt. It was run in two divisions in 1968, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1982 and 1985. National Stallion Stakes (filly Division)
The National Stallion Stakes was an American Thoroughbred horse race for two-year-old fillies held annually for the twenty-four years between 1948 through 1971. It was created as a counterpart to the National Stallion Stakes which was first run in 1898 at Morris Park Racecourse and was open to horses of either sex until 1948 when it became a race exclusively for colts and geldings. Contested on dirt at a distance of five and one-half furlongs, the filly division was hosted by Belmont Park in Elmont, New York except for 1963 through 1967 when it was run at Aqueduct Racetrack in South Ozone Park, Queens, New York. The race was restricted to fillies whose sire had been nominated for the race by its owner before the end of the foal's birth year. Matron Stakes (United States)
The Matron Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually during the fall season at Belmont Park, the New York Racing Association (NYRA) track in Elmont, Long Island, New York. It is open to two-year-old fillies and is the filly counterpart to the Belmont Futurity Stakes. The Matron Stakes was run over a straight course before 1959, with the exception of 1941. Colleen Stakes
The Colleen Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually during the first part of August at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. Open to two-year-old fillies, it is contested on dirt over a distance of furlongs (1,210 yards / 1,106 meters). Inaugurated in 1887 at the Monmouth Park Association racetrack in Long Branch, New Jersey, it was raced at Jerome Park Racetrack in Fordham, New York, in 1891 as a result of political pressure from New Jersey State anti-gambling politicians. The race returned to Monmouth Park for 1892 and 1893, after which the New Jersey Legislature enacted laws that ended betting in the state, and the racetrack was forced out of business. In 1946, the New Jersey Legislature passed a bill providing for state regulation of horse racing, and the new Monmouth Park Racetrack opened that year with the Colleen Stakes as part of its regular racing schedule. Alcibiades Stakes
The Alcibiades Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in early October at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky. A Grade I race, it is open to two-year-old fillies willing to race one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt. Sponsored by Darley Racing since 2003, the Alcibiades Stakes was named for Hal Price Headley's great foundation mare Alcibiades. The race is currently part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series. The winner will automatically qualify for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. The race obtained Graded stakes race status in 1973 and was a Grade III race through 1975, a Grade II from 1976 through 2006 and elevated in 2007 to Grade I status with a current purse of $500,000.
