Frank Nelson Doubleday
Frank Nelson Doubleday (January 8, 1862 – January 30, 1934), known to friends and family as “Effendi” (phonetic "F.N.D."), founded the Doubleday & McClure Company in 1897, which later operated under other names. Starting work at the age of 14 after his father's business failed, Doubleday began with Charles Scribner's Sons in New York. His son Nelson Doubleday, son-in-law John Turner Sargent, Sr. and grandson Nelson Doubleday, Jr. all worked in the company and led it through different periods. In 1986, after years of changes in the publishing business, his grandson Nelson Doubleday, Jr. as president sold the Doubleday Company to the German group Bertelsmann. Frank Doubleday (January 28, 1945 – March 3, 2018) was an American actor whose most notable roles were as film villains. Doubleday was born in Norwich, Connecticut and moved to Los Angeles with his family as a child. Doubleday is known for films including John Carpenter's '' Assault on Precinct 13'' (1976) and John Carpenter's ''Escape from New York'' (1981); in the latter of which he played the character of Romero. John Gordon Doubleday (27 November 1920–27 April 1982) was a British diplomat who was ambassador to Liberia. Biography Doubleday was educated at Bedford School and at St John's College, Cambridge. After service in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, and then service in the Colonial Administrative Service in Northern Rhodesia between 1949 and 1965, he entered the British Diplomatic Service in 1965. He was Deputy High Commissioner to the Bahamas between 1973 and 1976 and to Sri Lanka between 1976 and 1978, before serving as Ambassador to Liberia between 1978 and 1980. John Doubleday (sculptor)
John Doubleday (born 9 October 1947) is a British sculptor and painter. His work includes statues of political leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Golda Meir as well as cultural icons such as The Beatles, Sherlock Holmes and Laurel and Hardy. Doubleday was born in 1947 in Langford, near Maldon, Essex and studied sculpture at Goldsmiths College. In 2014, he unveiled a statue of Herbert George Columbine which is the United Kingdom's only statue of a named army private. John Doubleday (restorer)
John Doubleday (about 1798 – 25January 1856) was a British craftsperson, restorer, and dealer in antiquities who was employed by the British Museum for the last 20 years of his life. He undertook several duties for the museum, not least as a witness in criminal trials, but was primarily their specialist restorer, perhaps the first person to hold the position. He is best known for his 1845 restoration of the severely-damaged Roman Portland Vase, an accomplishment that places him at the forefront of his profession at the time. While at the British Museum, Doubleday also dealt in copies of coins, medals, and ancient seals. His casts in coloured sulphur and in white metal of works in both national and private collections, allowed smaller collections to hold copies at a fraction of the price that the originals would command. Edmund Doubleday
Edmund Doubleday (died December 1620) was an English vintner, lawyer, office-holder and politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1614. He was jointly responsible for the capture of Guy Fawkes in the Gunpowder Plot. Doubleday was acting as a scrivener and public notary by 1587 and then studied law at Middle Temple. He was active at the parish of St Margaret's, Westminster where he signed parish accounts from 1590. He was overseer of the poor in 1590. By the 1590s he had acquired leases of several properties from Westminster Abbey and marriages to wealthy widows brought him various property in Westminster which included the Saracens Head on King Street. In 1591 he was assigned half the lease of Ebury Manor by Thomas Knyvet with whom he was subsequently involved in various activities. From 1592 to 1595 he was High Constable of Westminster. Arthur Doubleday (16 October 1865 – 23 January 1951) was a South African-born prelate who served in the Roman Catholic Church as the second Bishop of Brentwood from 1920 to 1951.
