Dortmund-Märkische Eisenbahn
The Dortmund-Märkische Eisenbahn GmbH (DME) was a German train operating company, that operated the Dortmund– Hagen–Lüdenscheid train service (route RB52) from 30 May 1999 to 11 December 2004. It was a subsidiary of the Dortmunder Stadtwerke (74%) and the Märkische Verkehrsgesellschaft (26%), the municipal public transport operators of Dortmund and Märkischer Kreis. History As part of the German rail reform after German reunification, regulation of regional train services passed from federal to state (''Länder'') control in 1996. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the state established regional rail authorities ('' Aufgabenträger''). Two of them, Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and Zweckverband SPNV Ruhr-Lippe (ZRL) put the operation of route RB52, operated hitherto by Deutsche Bahn, out to tender as a pilot project. Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr
The Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (), abbreviated VRR, is a public transport association (Verkehrsverbund) in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It covers most of the Ruhr area, as well as neighbouring parts of the Lower Rhine region, including Düsseldorf and thus large parts of the Rhine-Ruhr conurbation. It was founded on 1 January 1980, and is Europe’s largest body of such kind, covering an area of some with more than 7.8 million inhabitants, spanning as far as Dorsten in the north, Dortmund in the east, Langenfeld in the south, and Mönchengladbach and the Dutch border in the west. Fröndenberg
Fröndenberg (; Westphalian: ''Frönnenbiärg'') is a town in the district of Unna, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Geography Fröndenberg is situated in the Ruhr valley, approx. 10 km south-east of the district capital Unna, near the Hönne. Unna
Unna is a city of around 59,000 people in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, the seat of the Unna district. The newly refurbished Unna station has trains to all major cities in North Rhine Westphalia including Dortmund, Cologne, Münster, Hamm, Düsseldorf and Wuppertal. There is also the Regional-Express 7 (Rhein-Münsterland-Express), which runs from Rheine via Cologne to Krefeld. Geography Unna is situated on an ancient salt-trading route, the Westphalian Hellweg. Trade on this route and during the period of the Hanseatic League came from as far as London. The city is located at the eastern extremity of the Ruhr district, about east of the centre of Dortmund. Iserlohn
Iserlohn (; Westphalian: ''Iserlaun'') is a city in the Märkischer Kreis district, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is the largest city by population and area within the district and the Sauerland region. Geography Iserlohn is located at the north end of the Sauerland near the Ruhr river, in West-Central Germany. History The Pancratius church (also called Bauernkirche) is believed to have been founded in around 985, but the first written document mentioning ''lon'' dates only from 1150. Arnsberg (; wep, Arensperg) is a town in the Hochsauerland county, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is the location of the Regierungsbezirk Arnsberg administration and one of the three local administration offices of the Hochsauerlandkreis district. Sauerland Net
The Sauerland Net (german: Sauerland-Netz) is a group of railway services in the western Sauerland and the eastern Ruhr of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and consists of three Regionalbahn services, RB 52 ( Dortmund– Hagen–Lüdenscheid), RB 53 (Dortmund–Schwerte–Iserlohn) and RB 54 (Unna–Fröndenberg–Menden– Neuenrade), and the Regional-Express service RE 57 (Dortmund–Bestwig– Winterberg/Brilon Stadt). The RB 52 also carries the brand name of the ''Volmetal-Bahn'', the RB 53 is called the ''Ardey-Bahn'', the RB 54 is called the ''Hönnetal-Bahn'' and the RE 57 is called the ''Dortmund Sauerland-Express''. Rurtalbahn GmbH
Rurtalbahn (German for "Rur Valley Railway") is a railway company servicing the Rur valley from Linnich to Heimbach. Its major hub is Düren station, from where two train lines run to the two destinations. Rurtalbahn GmbH is owned by R.A.T.H GmbH (74.9%) and Dürener Kreisbahn (25.1%). It was outsourced from Dürener Kreisbahn in 2003, who had formerly promoted their railway network as Rurtalbahn. Dürener Kreisbahn had operated the two train lines since 1993 (however with the line to Linnich being shorter - trains only went to Jülich). On weekends, Rurtalbahn runs several tourist trains in the Eifel area such as the BördeExpress.
