Dorothy T. Krieger
Dorothy T. Krieger was an American academic and endocrine researcher who served as a professor and director of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Her major contribution was her discovery of treatment for Cushing's Disease. Early life and career Kreiger was born in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 18, she graduated with a degree from the Barnard College. In 1949, she received a medical degree from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. In April 1984, she received a special award, Albert Lasker Special Public Health Award, by the Albert D. and Mary Lasker Foundation. Personal life She was married to C. The endocrine system is a messenger system comprising feedback loops of the hormones released by internal glands of an organism directly into the circulatory system, regulating distant target organs. In vertebrates, the hypothalamus is the neural control center for all endocrine systems. In humans, the major endocrine glands are the thyroid gland and the adrenal glands. The study of the endocrine system and its disorders is known as endocrinology. Glands that signal each other in sequence are often referred to as an axis, such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Cushing's Disease
Cushing's disease is one cause of Cushing's syndrome characterised by increased secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the anterior pituitary (secondary hypercortisolism). This is most often as a result of a pituitary adenoma (specifically pituitary basophilism) or due to excess production of hypothalamus CRH (corticotropin releasing hormone) (tertiary hypercortisolism/hypercorticism) that stimulates the synthesis of cortisol by the adrenal glands. Pituitary adenomas are responsible for 80% of endogenous Cushing's syndrome, when excluding Cushing's syndrome from exogenously administered corticosteroids. The equine version of this disease is Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction. This should not be confused with ectopic Cushing syndrome or exogenous steroid use.
